Phase 3/soft food

Recommended Posts

I am heading to 3 week post op for gastric sleeve. I am unfortunately very texture sensitive with food so makes this phase difficult and scary. One food i cannot tolerate is eggs. Any suggestions for alternative soft breakfast ideas, or any other meals for picky eaters???

Yogurt? tuna, pureed. chili, cottage cheese or ricotta. There is nothing wrong with having a lunch meal for Breakfast.

I liked oatmeal thinned with unsweetened applesauce for breakfast.

Also, per my team - a lot of people really dislike the textures of the soft food phase, so if you'd rather stay for an extra week or so on full liquids, that won't hurt anything. Or just do one soft meal a day. You can stay with a shake or yogurt for breakfast if that's what you're doing already.

Baked Ricotta with Marinara

This is the one that everyone RAVES about!

8 oz of ricotta cheese

½ cup grated Parmesan

1 large egg, beaten

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Salt & pepper to taste

½ cup marinara sauce

½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Mix ricotta cheese, parmesan, beaten egg, seasonings together and place in a oven proof dish. Pour marinara on top and top with mozzarella cheese. Bake it in the oven @ 450 for about 20-25 minutes (best) or nuke it till hot and bubbly.

Can you do the liquid egg whites. I found I tolerate them better than eggs. I add a little salsa or homemade pesto or just even a little cottage cheese and it goes down well.

Will you try tofu? It takes on whatever flavor you put in it.

I'm not entirely sure either of us will be able to eat a full packet, at this point, and it's going to be SUPER important to make sure the oats get cooked all the way before eating it, but something I've always liked when I've been on low-carb plans in the past are these Protein oatmeals: https://store.bariatricpal.com/collections/breakfast/products/bariatricpal-hot-protein-breakfast-apple-cinnamon-oatmeal

(Full disclosure: I didn't buy this exact brand; nor did I buy it here. I got the ProtiDiet brand and really liked it. But I imagine BP's is similar, and I'll probably try it when I run out of the ProtiDiet ones. Also, the apple cinnamon flavor is better if you add some additional cinnamon and ginger.)

I noticed I had a box in my pantry today, so I'm probably going to give this a try for tomorrow's breakfast.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
