Pain and gas upon drinking

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I just found this forum, and I’m loving it already :D

I had my surgery two days ago (sleeve), and since then things have not been progressing very well. Every time I try to drink anything, I get a tight burning feeling in my chest. This is followed by a surge of stomach gas. Like somehow all that was in my stomach was gas, and by drinking I am displacing it.

Is this normal? I know I’m barely out of the hospital, but I’m not able to fulfill my liquid and Protein Shake goals because it hurts so much. Would this be a sign on stenosis? I also underwent a hiatal hernia repair during the procedure - would that be causing these problems?

Thanks so much!

What you're experiencing is normal. Your body is reacting to the temperature of the liquid. It will take trial and error multiple times. Gas is also normal, walk, walk and keep walking.

Many patients find it difficult to meet their daily Protein and liquid requirements during the first couple weeks after surgery. This is because your body is in a major heal mode. Just keep working towards those goal each day and you should soon be able to meet them.

Use your spirometer thingy, walk and walk. Not long walks around the neighborhood but multiple short walks around your house through out the day. It's going to take some time to meet your intake goals at every step on this journey. Some progress faster and easier than others but for now just take small sips and listen to your body. Stop when it begins to bother and take a break. Eventually you'll learn when to stop before it begins to bother. After some time sip again. You'll learn patience if you don't have it now. Congrats by the way on your surgery and HAPPY HEALING!!!

Did your doctor put you on a PPI when you left the hospital (something like Prilosec that reduces stomach acid production (Omeprazole is the generic))? My doc does that for a month after surgery to help with the healing. If not, you might ask your surgeon about it, at least until the swelling in your stomach goes down. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
