Need Help getting my protein intake!!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I had my surgery August 13th, 2018. Unfortunately there were a few complications but thank goodness all is well now!

Since the surgery I have lost 43 pounds.
Today was my third post op appointment was was cleared for the stage 4 diet and to head back to work! Yay!

My only issue so far is trying to get that Protein intake at about 60 g.

I’ve tried so many shakes and supplements and have yet to find one that I like.
I used to take body fortress before my surgery and my favorites were vanilla, chocolate and cinnamon bun, but now I can’t even handle the taste of those.

I’ve discovered ripple nutrition, which is pretty good and my doc said it was ok. I also found fairlife core power but I was told to avoid that one since it contains 26g of sugar.

I want to know what other shakes or protein supplements you guys recommend so I can try them out, in case I haven’t already.

I’m clear to eat solids, but I’d like to keep my two shakes as Meal Replacements and one solid meal a day, as it’s still very hard for me to eat, as I’m not hungry all the time anymore. But I want to make sure that protein is in....

Please help! Thank you !!

If you can tolerate food even though you do not feel hungry it is good to get Protein from food.

You can eat small portions of Greek yogurt...I like Oikos triple zero.

You can eat small amounts of cottage cheese, tuna pouches, etc.

Glad your complications are over and good luck returning to work.

Even with being able to eat food I have trouble getting it all in. I have a couple of go tos for Protein. I have Isopure unflavored that I add to Soups etc. I love Syntrax Cookies and cream. I use fairlife skim milk 13g protein before adding powders. If I'm short for the day then I'll grab that. I also will take a peach tea crystal light packet and syntrax lemon tea Protein Powder and mix with about 20oz Water and so pin that through the day

I’m 5 weeks post sleeve. Getting most of my Protein from cottage cheese and scrambled eggs, both of which taste really good to me right now. Just drinking one shake a day (Unjury made with Fairlife milk) which gives me 34 g of protein for Breakfast. Not a fan of protein powder products though.

Have you considered converting your shakes to smoothies? For breakfast two days a week (and I'm 2 years out) I use 1 cup of Fairlife skim milk (13g) plus one scoop of vanilla Protein powder (25g) plus a handful of frozen tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, peach) and I have a 200-ish calorie smoothie from the blender that has more than 30G of protein. I also do a cup of cold brew coffee, a scoop of chocolate protein powder and sugarfree caramel Syrup with ice in the blender for a 25-30g frappucino.

Get creative.

I HATED Protein Shakes. They all had this whey flavor that made me extremely ill. I tried everything, and it simply didn't work. But what I did finally end up not only tolerating, but actually enjoying, was fairlife milk. It is filtered to remove much of the sugar and lactose, and fortified with extra Protein and Calcium. So, I could drink the fat free fairlife milk with either sugar free strawberry Syrup, or heat it up and put sugar free hot chocolate mix or sugar free hershey syrup in it, or blend it with some PB2 or other fun things. It was how I survived for a few months!

Isopure low carb in Dutch chocolate flavor (its a powder so you have to make it yourself)

My friend told me that this one is really good! I like the Cookies and cream, but I'm not a big fan of the mint chocolate chip.

It is! (and expensive too)

I only bought one bag 10 months ago. I use it for specialized recipes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
