Hi everyone-

So, I'm 8 weeks post op today and am doing pretty well except for Protein Shakes. I seem to be intolerant of either whey Protein or dairy. I point more toward the whey because in all ways prepared- Water, almond milk, and even fairlife (filter lactose free milk). They have resulted in frequent bathroom trips :(

I may try veggie protein or soy but was wondering if anyone else has had issues? Thank you!

whey isolate should be as lactose free as Fairlife. Milk based Proteins (whey) come in 2 forms, Concentrate and Isolate. Concentrate is just as it sounds, concentrated milk protein. Isolate is a super filtered form of whey and removes most if not all lactose.

It's possible the cause isn't the protein but some other ingredient like sugar alcohols which are known to cause issues in some folks. Try another brand of Whey Isolate before you write off Whey proteins as the cause. You can get samples typically at most supplement places.

I became whey Protein intolerant at 4 weeks post op. Different brands of Protein Shakes, protein powders, Protein Bars, protein waters, all containing whey made me extremely nauseated. I eliminated they whey protein isolate, switched to casein and soy, and I have been fine ever since.

About 6 months later I'm going to test out Premier Protein again, and see if I have gotten over the issue.

More likely is lactose intolerant.

You can try whey Protein isolates

Or you could try any brand/generic lactose intolerant pill which just makes lactose easier to digest.

If you have protein products you cant use this is probably the easiest and smartest test. And its not medicine, its more of an over the counter digestive aid/enzyme .

is a generic one from Walmart for 2$

A very safe and inexpensive experiment

Take 2 of those with a product that previously upset your tummy. If you feel fine afterwards, its an open and shut case of lactose intolerance. And you now know how to treat it.

I became whey intolerant the very day after surgery!

Neither my surgeon nor my primary had a clue what was wrong. Tested me for EVERYTHING on EARTH! I gave more blood that a lab monkey!

Then I asked on this forum and someone suggested switching to plant based Protein. I chose to stop all whey shakes and waters, grabbed a Pea Protein and never looked back. Stomach issues were gone within 12 hours!

At just over 2 months out I could begin using whey based protein bars but Ive never been able to hold liquid whey again. I can, however, eat cheese. I don't now what it is, but if I use plant based shakes, I'm golden and Pea Protein Shakes work the very best for me because they do not froth in the blender with Water.

I hope this info helps.

Don't count on your Doctor to know to have you try plant protein. I went to two outstanding Doctors. When I later called them to tell them how I fixed things, they were astonished!

Oh, man! I wish you the best. I do that, "I'm going to try a little bit of Whey Protein shake" thing every now and then. about two ounces in my stomach lets my know we're about mohave an extended date with the Ladies Room. Oddly, I CAN now eat whey protein based bars if I don't have more than two in one day!

I had a half bottle of Premier Protein with coffee, and it went well ... no issues!

Shoot, I’m a bit jelly. I can’t hold coffee in either. Not if I want to keep my Vitamins in during the day. But, hey, I’m willing to make the trade. I’m healthier than I’ve been since my early thirties!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
