No pre op fast?

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is 9/24 and I feel like my heart is gonna fall straight out through my butt thanks to nerves. I think one huge reason is my surgeon requires NO type of preoperative fast or diet. I just have to fast after midnight. Has anyone ever heard of this????

It seems that surgeons have their own preferred pre-op methods, some do not require a pre-op diet, some do, some base the pre-op diet on a persons weight, and heavier they are the long their period for pre-op diet.

My doctor requires a two week pre-op diet. If you want to give yourself an extra push, there is no reason you can't do a one or two week pre-op diet...here is one, but there are many others out there.

I had my surgery on 8/29/18 and my team did not require pre-op diet either, I just could not have anything to eat or drink after 12:00 midnight before the day of surgery. Each team is different that's all and they have their reasons. No wrong or right way...I was just fine.

I was very nervous too which is pretty normal. Once I got to the hospital and prepped they gave me something in my IV to relax me and it was over so quick.

I wish you all the best, you will be fine.

Every doctor has their own way, and don't forget that it also has to do with you, the patient. Not everyone needs to have their liver shrunk or go on pre-operative diets for weight reduction etc etc... Some insurances require it, some surgeons require it and sometimes it's required to make the surgery safer due to the patients anatomy.

Not having a pre-op is nothing to be worried about at all!

I'm sitting here dying laughing about the "I feel like my heart is gonna fall straight out through my butt" comment!
But seriously, I feel the same exact way! It's all going to be okay for both of us though! My surgeon also does not do a preop liver shrinking diet. I think it's all up to the surgeon's discretion. I wish you a smooth and speedy recovery with your surgery!

It is quite normal; it is all up to the surgeons (and occasionally the patient) and what he needs to feel comfortable doing the surgery. Some surgeons are intimidated by the nearby (often) fatty liver and impose these diets, while others have different skills and experiences such that they know their way around that potential problem. Indeed, some surgeons specifically don't want their patients doing these multi-week fasts as they want them as strong and healthy as possible when on the table, and fasting doesn't do it.
