So I'm exactly 7 days post Op RNY.. Still having left sided incisions pain, getting over a left plueral effusion ( Fluid in the space around the lung). My surgeon wants to send me back to work next week.... I'm a nurse. Just wanted to know if this was common practice. TIA

I took 2 full months off. My job requires a lot of moving, lifting, squatting, etc, so I wanted to make 100% sure not only that I was fully healed, but that I had time to figure out which foods I could eat and which I had to watch out for before going back. You can request longer, you just have to tell them, not ask, when you want to go back, that's what I did for both my Lapband and my RNY.

Yeah, my jobs are physically demanding as well. I feel like he's pressuring me to go back. I guess I'll have to try to put my foot down. I have my first follow up today, even though I just got out of the hospital for the lung issue yesterday. Thanks so much.

I would most certainly push, just be very direct with your "request"

"I don't feel comfortable going back to work so soon due to the physical demands of my job, I want to be sure I'm fully healed before I put my body back into that situation, so to avoid any complications or injury, I would like you to write me a return to work letter for (whatever date you want to return)"

I wish I could afford to take more time off. I had planned to go back yesterday ( exactly 7 from surgery) but I’m still feeling miserable. I absolutely have to return next Monday. Since I’m not technically full time I don’t get any benefits. I have a feeling next week will be a very long and exhausting one. My job is physically demanding as well. The lifting and bending are going to be rough.

[emoji20] I'm sorry hun. I really can't afford it either but I have a good support system. Will your job accept you back with restrictions? Mine won't.

No, they won’t. I’m just going to have to do what i can and hope coworkers can help with a couple things for a week or so. Lord knows I’ve helped them in the past. If not, I guess I’ll get sent home.

I took six weeks off. I’m a nurse as well working over 12 hours on a busy and physically demanding medical surgical unit.

Surprised your surgeon is in a rush to send you back.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
