5 days post op VGS, but I don't feel different

Recommended Posts

So maybe it's the food demons trying to convince me that the surgery isn't going to be successful in the long run, but my stomach doesn't feel any different. I'm hydrating fine (I'm averaging around 48oz a day) and holding down Protein Shakes with no issues other than a little gas. I'm concerned that I don't "feel full" as every one said I would. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thank you so much. I've been a little discouraged today bc of it. I'm SO thankful my recovery has been smooth so far but I was a little concerned bc I don't "feel" different. I guess it's just a process of retraining my mind as I go?

I’m so glad you asked this! I was sleeved on 9/12 and I feel the same way. The only time I really even notice a difference is if I try to drink really cold Water. I’m glad to hear that it’s different with food- I was getting worried.

Yes! I've noticed kind of a tinge of pain if something is super cold but that's it.

I agree, had the same issue. I was surprised at how much I could drink. But food is a very different story. And it is an adjustment. But after a couple of months you will settle into a groove.
Yes! I've been kind of freaked out at how well I've tolerated liquids and how thirsty I stay. I haven't had any problems drinking other than having to stop myself from guzzling just bc i was told it will come back up or hurt. Thank you!!

Like others have said, it will show as you progress into more solid foods. The restriction will hit rather quickly. Take your time eating as you get used to your new "normal" and make sure to chew. Almost 1 year post op and don't feel much different from month 2 to 11 when it comes to the amount of food. Enjoy the few bites you have, and better yet, enjoy the conversation with those that you are with.

When you say solid foods, do you mean things like chicken, or are you counting cottage cheese and yogurt in that?

Felt the same way for a few, but Bypass patients get to the puree stage usually in 3 days post op, so that's really only as long as that sensation stuck around, I didn't feel anything different, Until I started putting something other than just liquid in.

You will feel it with Yogurt and cottage cheese too, not just chicken. (At least I do)

You will feel some restriction with all foods, even sliders in the very beginning, as inflammation subsides some foods will be easier and then some foods will slide easier too. You might have food aversions to some items because either they don't taste good now or they get stuck too quickly. At 11 months chicken breast is still not great to eat, and just now lettuce is going down okay. Everyone is different and something that you can't tolerate you will be able to a little later in the process.

Just follow the plan, stay super hydrated, no drinking a few minutes before, chew small bites, wait, stop before full - this one takes some learning, never ever ever overeat your level of fullness, drink 30 minutes after. You may have weird 'signs' you are getting full - runny nose, sneezing, hiccups - I still hiccup, and my nose sometimes runs. In the beginning my nose ran like a spigot......And sometimes you get the 'foamies' or 'slimes' - stop eating or you will upchuck....

Enjoy the journey!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
