Pre-Surgery liquid diet and *intense* muscle pain?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am new here and made this account just to ask this question.

I'm on day 5 of my pre-op liquid diet and yesterday and today have been in *intense* pain. Muscle pain all over my body, but especially in my legs, that is just intense sustained pain. They feel like they're on fire. Pain to the point that at times (for as long as an hour+) I'm writhing in a ball and sobbing and screaming and my husband has no idea what to do. Sustained pain of an intensity that I haven't felt since I broke my upper arm years ago.

Did this happen to anyone else? Is there a way to fix it? I'm losing my mind here and can't deal with this kind of ongoing pain! I will definitely call my doctor as soon as they open tomorrow if it hasn't stopped, but it's Sunday and looking for input in the meantime.

Thanks so much.

Could this be a lack of potassium? The joy of this diet is that we are going to the bathroom much more then normal and it is draining more Fluid from our bodies and with the excess fluid comes potassium. Are you still taking all of your Vitamins and supplements? With our restrictions it is hard to know what else to tell you to take or use. If you can, perhaps some gatoraid if it is on your liquid diet.

Yes, we thought of Postassium and got some zero calorie sports drink like Gatorade that says it has potassium.

I am still taking a Multi-Vitamin.

Maybe it's not enough? Or it's something else, I don't know.

Thanks for the ideas though!

Reaction to the whey Protein? Drink a glass of milk too. And not just potassium but magnesium and maybe a b-complex.

Take a bath in epsom salts.

The best general source of potassium that I have found is the low sodium version of V8 juice, which has around 1100mg per 11oz can. Most of the sports drinks have little in them, and the legal FDA limit for OTC supplements is about 100mg, vs our RDA of about 4400mg, so it is tough to get much in on a liquid diet without Rx supplements - the V8 is the best around (it's hard to OD on real food sources, so that's your best bet.)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
