I am just over 2 wks post op RNY bypass. Did really well, had no major issues until the past 2 days. I was getting in my fluids and Protein in acceptable amounts for where I am in the process. Then, 2 days ago, I started gagging on all fluids. I do manage to keep small amounts down. As strange as it sounds I have no problem with the purees and soft foods just thin fluids. I have tried the different temps and nothing seems to agree with me. Any thoughts on how to handle this or how long to continue trying before calling my surgeon?

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. Be willing to experiment. After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Even Water changed. In the hospital it tasted excessively chlorinated and I could not drink it. So I experimented. sugar free popsicles became my best friend. Some individuals find hot or cold can help with fluids. For me, I found that I could tolerate flavored water. So I began using Crystal Light. I also found a new drink Bai which I liked cold. In the winter, I found that I tolerate Hot Drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good.

The Fluid requirement is met by a combination. It is not only the water that you drink each day. But also the water you drink when you take your Vitamins and medicine. It is the milk you drink. It is the fluids content of the Protein Shakes. It is the water component of the Soups you take. It is met by flavored water such as Crystal Light. It is met by sugar free popsicles. It is met by tea and Decaf coffee. It is a combination of all the fluids that you consume during the day.

Some folks develop texture and temperature issues with Water. Try changing the temp of your water or adding some flavors (because oddly enough this changes the "texture")

I've tried Crystal light, Bai, gatorade zero, hot tea. I can tolerate Jello and popsicles.

Just keep trying things and retrying things that were problems... lots of changes can happen while you are healing.

To say that Fluid intake is easy would be a stretch for me. I can say that my tolerance has a day over day change (that may be a slight exaggeration, let's says 3 days over 3). I went from only being able to tolerate hot broths and room temperature Water, to flavored room temp water to no broths, to ice cold water and no flavors. I'm only 3.5 weeks post op and my fluid intake and tolerance has changed more times than I can count.

listen to @James Marusek and just experiment until you find the right one that works and hopefully (unlike me) sticks.

Thicken products to increase the texture/thickness of the fluids

Absolutely! Make blended Protein Shakes. I can't handle the thick texture, but it may be perfect for you.

Thank you all. I'm not going to get overly concerned because I am getting Fluid in my shakes and through popsicles etc. I will keep trying different things and if that doesnt work, try a thickening agent. I appreciate everyones help, thanks!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
