Larbon03 1 Posted September 8, 2018 I'd like to say hello to everyone here as I am a newb. My surgery date was Thursday Sept. 6 and I came home today from the hospital. Bowel habits are a bit embarrassing to discuss but I had my first BM today and it was loose. This was of course after I left the hospital and after normal call hours. It is not serious at this point but wanted to see if others had this trouble shortly after surgery? Did you use imodium, citrucel? 1 Rosang3 reacted to this
Naughty Glitter Goddess 645 Posted September 9, 2018 Lucky you! You'll find, by far, that Constipation is a much more common problem. I certainly would not treat the diarrhea with Fiber or immodium. But your doc should be consulted before you do that. I'd be surprised if they recommend it so soon after surgery. I'd wait a day and call if it's frequent and doesn't resolve. We don't want you getting dehydrated! But a once a day bout of diarrhea, man, I'd take it !
Larbon03 1 Posted September 9, 2018 Thanks for the advice! I was worried I would end up having more troubles but I haven't. So you're exactly right, I havent needed to take anything so far.

Did you use imodium, citrucel? If you had the traditional DS it isn't uncommon in the beginning. However, if it continues you probably should speak with your team. Thankfully, Constipation isn't often a problem with us .

karyn2018 22 Posted September 10, 2018 I had my surgery the 5th of September. I am on the same boat as you. Runny stools. The docs put me on Miralax but I stopped taking it after post op day 2. It was too much for me lol I am taking liquid Tylenol for pain and every time I take it I go straight to the bathroom. From what I’ve read and friends that have had the procedure, getting the runs and or being constipated is normal. It just forces me to continue to hydrate. I’ve even added coconut Water to increase my potassium. My potassium was low the day of surgery and had to be supplemented. I wouldn’t use anti diarrhea stuff unless your doctor agrees. Honestly, you will end up being constipated and playing a yo yo game with your bowels. With all the bloating I’ve used gas x. Besides that I’m focusing on hydration. Good luck with everything!!! 1 Rosang3 reacted to this
DixieD 3 Posted September 12, 2018 I have had the loop-ds/said-s over a year and a half ago... I had serious diarrhea for the first year post op... it has now considerably slowed down but it still happens a few times per week, especially I noticed if my carb count is higher than 15% of my overall consumption in my fitness pal for the day. Carbs really are the devil for me!! They make me extremely bloated and gassy as well! 1 Strivingforbetter reacted to this
Rosang3 3 Posted September 13, 2018 My surgery was also 9/6 and I still haven’t had a bowl movement!!!
disco stu 73 Posted September 13, 2018 Welcome to DS. I'm about 4 months out and still experience explosive, speckle-the-bowl, diarrhea four to ten times a day (and night). It's my new normal and I've just had to get used to it. 2 DixieD and Rosang3 reacted to this

Strivingforbetter 247 Posted September 16, 2018 (edited) I'm 14 months post op DS and still have loose stools. sometimes diarrhea if I've consumed too much sugar. I've never had an issue with Constipation. My bowel movements have changed forever since the DS, just very soft but I guess that's the new normal. Welcome to the world of the DSer. Frequently I have to go in the middle of the night when I'm only 20% awake----which I'm not a fan of, but that's life now. misskim3297 13 Posted September 19, 2018 You're completely normal. My surgery was 3/16/18 and I had loose stool all the time for the first few months. My surgeon wasn't worried as long as I was getting my liquids and Vitamins in. Now it's only loose if I eat something that doesn't agree with me.

If you had the traditional DS and are eating pureed or solid food then eat Protein. It's hard to fathom as it's a new mindset but you can eat protein when you're hungry and it's OK.
