J_Mkay 17 Posted September 5, 2018 So last week I had a kidney stone. Worst pain I've ever felt in my life. Much worse than any surgery I've had. Anyway, I know that lack of fluids can be a cause but also too much Protein can cause it too. Does anyone know what amount of protein is too much? I know right now I'm not eating enough protein but I'm a little nervous about eating too much protein cause I really don't want any more kidney stones. Eating is a struggle anyway cause I don't get hungry. I make myself eat and I'm still figuring out what I can tolerate. I'm 2 months post of vsg. Thanks! FancyChristine15 810 Posted September 5, 2018 First of all, sorry you had to go through that; I've heard that kidney stones are terrible. How much too much Protein is will vary from person to person. My doctor recommended that I get at least 80g per day, but I do around 100g per day with no issues.

According to this article, this could be another contributing factor. https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/5-steps-for-preventing-kidney-stones-201310046721 I take 1500mg daily of calcium citrate soft chews. I spread this out a minimum of 2 hours a part, usually with food, and always 3 hours prior to taking my Multivitamin with Iron. 3 Sosewsue61, FluffyChix and Matt Z reacted to this

Mhy12784 423 Posted September 6, 2018 I don't know what's considered too much Protein, but I've been getting 200 to 250 g a day. 100g doesn't seem extreme by any measure
BlueCrush 408 Posted September 6, 2018 I actually just met with my bariatric nutrition today about this. She said that as you start to get above 100 grams of Protein per day, that it is actually more about the ratio or percentage of protein in your diet versus the actual number of grams. For example she was telling me that my protein should be no more than 40% of my daily calories after I get above 100 grams per day. Otherwise, your body will have trouble breaking down the protein? But my Breakfast is a Protein mugcake which basically is 50g of protein. Then I have 2 Protein Bars at work, another 50g. A small meal after work another 25-30g. (eggs, meat, something like that) dinner is basically lean meat 40 to 50g of protein, and before bed is a Protein Shake which is another 40 to 50g. Effectively I eat every 2 to 3 hours. Getting at least 20g of protein at each meal, with a few big meals being closer to 50g. If I was heavier I'd be concerned I'm eating so much, but since I'm legit borderline wasting away and trying to pack on muscle, I'm alright with how much I'm eating. As long as I can keep up the hardcore lifting routine and pack on muscle 1 Dfox1984 reacted to this

Thanks!I don't think there is a set number that is to much. I think it varies from person to person. Do you have a dietician/nutritionist that you could call to ask. My dietician has me on a minimum of 95g of protein per day but has also told me if I get more in that's great. So I usually average between 95g- 110g.Sent from my SM-G960W using BariatricPal mobile app

I’m only 10 weeks out and I can only eat three tablespoons of food I can’t imagine eating that much but one day I’ll be able to again!
