Keto after sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I am almost 3 months out from my sleeve and have lost 50 lbs which I am good with but still struggle with getting all of my Protein in so I have started following the ketogenic diet. Anyone else tried this? Thoughts? Results?

If you're truly doing Keto, then that isn't high Protein, that is high fat/

If you are doing low carb, then that fits with most program's plans of protein first, then non starchy veggies, carbs last.

That’s not true. While Keto is cooking with and using/eating more fats it’s main focus is Protein , no sugar and no carbs. But as with any diet you can modify as to not intake as much fat and salt. Maybe mine will get better but after I’ve eaten my protein, I have no room for any vegetables. And I was told to limit my carbs to 20-30 per day which is next to nothing because it seems like almost everything has carbs in it. I’m grasping at straws because my surgeons office did a merger and since then I haven’t been able to talk to my nutritionist.

You shouldn't have to do any other diets other then the one your dietician gave you. You have to have some carbs because they full the body. Drink one Protein Shake a day that has 30 grams of Protein in it then the rest food. I am not saying this mean but we all had weight loss surgery to get away from all the failed diets we already did. If any of them worked we wouldn't have needed surgery. Up your cardio.

I specifically asked my surgeon during a follow up about Keto since my sister is doing it and we share some recipes. She said "no keto" due to the high fat. I still share some recipes and many of them are easy to modify the fat content.

Actually Keto is high fat, low to moderate protein.

Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): This is a very low-carb, moderate-protein and high-fat diet. It typically contains 75% fat, 20% protein and only 5% carbs (1).

Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): This diet involves periods of higher-carb refeeds, such as 5 ketogenic days followed by 2 high-carb days.

Targeted ketogenic diet (TKD): This diet allows you to add carbs around workouts.

High-protein ketogenic diet: This is similar to a standard ketogenic diet, but includes more protein. The ratio is often 60% fat, 35% protein and 5% carbs.

If you don't have room for anything after you've eaten your protein, then that sounds like a pretty optimal post WLS diet.

I guess I'm not understanding what you are asking?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
