Oh and break up with caffeine and carbs now.

I was an avid coffee drinker for a couple years but I can't stand it black so I would use Creamers and sweeteners, etc and I think those things were causing insulin spikes so I weaned myself off. Tried cold turkey.....I definitely don't recommend that. But I've been caffeine free for about three months now. As for carbs, I have no issues there. I look at carbs as evil incarnate. LMAO Ever since doing Keto and Carnivore and reading all the research on those, I strive for ZERO carbs, it doesn't always happen but it's definitely a goal that I obsess over. My biggest issue is the boredom grazing and my very sedentary career as a crane operator. I literally sit in a seat and do nothing but pull levers for 12-14 hrs a day, 7 days a week. I would like to find a more active job but after doing this for over 20 years, and the awesome amount of $$$$$ it pays, it just seems insane to do anything else. If you've read my story on my profile then you know the only way I went from 420 to 190 after my VSG was because I had saved up enough money to take a year from working a focus strictly on exercise all day every day. Maybe that in itself wasn't the healthiest decision mentally. I don't know, I, like everyone else, am a work in progress. I'll figure it out. I think the things I am finding here in BP will help a lot this time. I wish I had stayed active in here since joining back in .....2012 I think??

Can one of you ladies share this chia seed pudding recipe your speaking of?

This makes 4 servings

Golden chocolate Chia pudding (matcha is optional). Warm the cashew or almond milk up. Stir in cocoa, turmeric, and cinnamon until it dissolves. Simmer for about 5 minutes to cook the turmeric powder. Remove from heat and let it chill or come to room temp. Add other ingredients and stir every 5-10 minutes until chia seeds fully expand. Sweeten with preferred sweetener. I am using Monk Fruit liquid drops for this one. Divide into 4 containers. Chill well.

Wow! This is a very brainiac YT from Dr. Michael Eades (Protein Power) discussing the effects of incretins on insulin secretion (fat storing hormone) and food quality/integrity. The take away from it is, if you want to have the lowest area under the curve (ie least amount of insulin secretion/fat storage) he says, "Don't eat. And if you do eat, don't eat carbs, but if you do eat carbs, eat the least process carbs, and eat them at the end of the meal. But it's best to eat meat, cuz it has the lowest incretin response.

Great video. I like how he breaks it down so the average person can comprehend what he's talking about. The little jokes he throws in keeps you interested as well.

This really helps to make sense of why a lot of people have been so successful on the Carnivore diet......AS LONG AS THEY ARE EATING CLEAN, ORGANIC, UNPROCESSED meats. Even if they eat meats higher in fat, as long as they're not mixing with sugars they're still good since to store the fat, it requires sugars. That was my understanding anyway. I understand though, that it would take an extremely strong commitment, to sustain long term on a clean, strict Carnivore. It also gets expensive buying Organic, Grass fed meats, it even gets hard trying to find them these days.

I liked the "Don't eat" part. It's something I have had rattling in my mind lately. With all these Vitamin and mineral supplements in patch form, I'm wondering how long a person could actually survive and be moderately active, without eating at all. But supplementing with Patches. I know there have been a few who have done a year or so on a Water fast but they definitely aren't active while doing it. Although he did say that without GIP going through the intestinal tract there would be bone loss. I guess that wouldn't be good. Lol

@JamesL73 .... you worry me :(

"I look at carbs as evil incarnate...... I strive for ZERO carbs, ..it's definitely a goal that I obsess over."

"I went from 420 to 190 after my VSG .... focus strictly on exercise all day every day."

None of that is a healthy mindset. Have you ever seen a therapist who specializes in eating disorders?

Question for those of you have done a lot of reading & research on IF

What are some of the recommended intervals for feast & famine type of IF?

Background:

My mom has been doing a VLCD + IF for a couple of months. Similar to WLS patients diets in the losing phase. She has been happy with it, and her losses. She went on vacation for two weeks, knowing she would go off the rails, and she did. She was expecting to come home to significant gain. But instead she had a loss! Now granted she was a lot more active than average, lots of golf and walking. But this piqued her interest in feast and famine type of IF.

Calling all IF experts :)

Congrats to your mom!!! That's fabulous!!!

I'm no expert on this stuff, but honestly, ADF with calorie restriction is my favorite and most easy method of fasting.

You mean ADF stuff? Or is that what you're asking? :)

Usually VLCD type of IF comes with ADF. So there are a couple ways most people do it:

The original one: alternate days of 500 cals (any combination of macros -- but healthy whole food) punctuated with alternating days of a normal diet. Here's the Link to that diet (not an affiliate link)

Here's Dr. Varady's Version of it (she did a lot of the research on VLCD ADF style diets). Here's the Link to that diet (not an affiliate link)

Here's the Fast Diet (5:2) by Dr. Moseley based on Dr. Varady's research. Here's the Link to that diet (not an affiliate link)

So the science is pretty sound on it. It's a very widely researched idea that cyclical calorie restriction with weight loss causes an epigenetic change(s)--switching on longevity and healing genes without impairing metabolism. It turns on the SIRTUAN genes and that lowers inflammation, extends telemeres, and conveys some pretty amazing benefits like reduction in asthma and other inflammatory diseases. The key on their diets is not doing the restriction like that longer than 48 consecutive hours.

As opposed to Dr. Fung's group who maintains if you are diseased, you have to do 36-72 hour fasts with one day of refeeding in between, until you get to a point of health and normal weight. He maintains that metabolic slowdown doesn't happen even in the face of calorie deficit because people are in ketosis and are in a fat burning state. So as such, any calorie deficit is made up by your own fat stores.

Brad Pilon's Eat-Stop-Eat method is a good plan for some, but it's mainly a TRE (16:8; 18:6, etc) style of eating that may not necessarily include a caloric deficit or a VLCD approach.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
