How many calories per day??

Recommended Posts

So just had my surgery last week. So far my calorie intake has been around 400-600. Is this normal? Should I be higher. What are your numbers??

For 1 week out, I would say that's pretty normal. I'm 5 months out, and I get around 1,100 a day.

Perfectly normal. It will increase gradually as you tolerate more foods.

Going on 7 weeks out and I'm just making it to 700 a day. Not everyday but 3 out of the last 5. Other days I was just over 300.

That is around where I was at 1 week post op. I am now 6 weeks post op and my dietitian wants me between 1000 & 1200 per day. My goal is to be between 1200 & 1400 per day by the 3 month mark.

My NUT told me not to even attempt the 900-1200 until about 9 months. Before that she said it’s hard if I’m eating the right foods. My plan has a lot of restrictions long term though.

I rarely go over 800. I am compliant, healthy and had my 3 month post op review with surgeon yesterday. He’s very pleased. Even though I’m at goal, my surgeon told me not to force calories/food. If I slip 10-20 pounds under goal before my new stomach can naturally hold more, everything will be fine.
If you are meeting Protein, Water and supplement requirements, if you are healthy, you are likely just fine.
If I were to eat 1200, 1300, 1400 calories per day, I would def gain on the reg! No question.

I am just over a month out and met with the surgeon and nutritionist today. I get between 450-600 calories a day. They say that's normal . I am allowed not to have up to 6 table spoons of food per meal, but can still only fit in 3. They said at about the 6 week mark that should ease up some. They said as long as I am getting between 60-80 grams of Protein per day, as close to 64 ounces of Fluid as I can get and taking my Vitamins I will be just fine!

They said above all listen to my body. Don't push my limits because others may be able to consume more at this stage.

I hope this information helps you and brings you some peace of mind! I was so thankful to find this virtual space because I had and will continue to have plenty of questions too!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
