first the doctor gives you a shot to numb you where your port is. then they find the port and get a hold of it, it feels like pressure because they are holding your port still so he can stick the tool (like a needle) in that allows them to put in liquid and take out liquid. they put the tool in you and then they put in the fill and they sit you up and you take a sip or two of Water to make sure it goes down then you're done. they take the tool out and put a bandaid over where they put the tool in and you're done. it take about 5 minutes, literally. the numbing stuff hurts a little but it only stings for a second then goes away. your port will be a little sore but it goes away in a day or so. liquids 24 hours, soft foods 24 after that then you can eat =]

My doctor doesn't use any numbing, but I havent found the fills to be that uncomfortable. I've had 2 so far, and they've went well. Just a slight pinching feeling initially. No pain or tenderness afterwards. You'll be fine. ;)

Hi Marcy. I just got back from getting my first fill and wanted to let you know it was pretty easy. My dr didn't numb me, he said it would be ANOTHER shot, so we tried it without and it was fine. It was a quick stick, but didn't hurt. Its nothing like getting a shot, because the liquid goes into the port, not your tissue. So, all I really felt was pressure at the band site, I guess.. He pulled all the saline out and then inserted a little more. He even went in a second time to give me a full 1cc. I already had 3.5cc in at surgery (I didn't know that) so now I'm at 4.5cc. I am not expecting agressive fills, so as of right now, 5 hours later, I am feeling normal. I am on liquids for two days then mushies, so it will be awhile until I test my fill level. So don't worry yourself too much. Just take some deep breaths and keep telling yourself that it will all be worth it in the long run! Good luck! :P b

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
