Having surgery while in college

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm currently doing my 6 month physician supervised weight loss prior to having my gastric bypass. I'm probably going to have a surgery date sometime in late February or early March of 2019.

What worries me is that I'm also in college and this is going to be at the beginning of the semester.

Should I take a semester off while I have the surgery and recoup or is it possible to have my surgery, take a few days off to recoup and carry on my schoolwork?

I'm afraid that I might have to miss a week and receive a failing grade or at least one less than what I deserve simply because I had to have surgery.

Maybe you can try to get it scheduled right before your Spring Break? Many people are able to return to their jobs after one week so you might be okay. I don't think youd need to take a whole semester

If you have a long walk to classes or carry around a lot of books or a heavy laptop, you're probably going to need a week minimum to recuperate. And believe me, at a few-days post op, you are not moving quickly. Plus, you will be really tired for a week or two and it's altogether possible you'll get a case of the post-op "stupids". We all react to anesthesia differently. I think Spring Break is a great idea, if you can swing it. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies!

I'll try to see if I can get scheduled on Spring break.

I had bypass surgery during spring break of this year. It worked out well but I would suggest taking a few extra days off. I told my professors that I was having my gallbladder removed and they were of course fine giving me the time off . Best of luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
