I’m terrible at this!

Recommended Posts

I feel like I didn’t deserve this opportunity because of the way I’ve been treating this gift.
I’m five months in and I don’t track, I eat low carb but sometimes I eat junk like pizza like two slices which isn’t normal. I also don’t exercise, or take my Vitamins. I’ve missed my three month check up I know it’s unacceptable but I’ve lost motivation and no one is here to push me.
Fortunately I’ve been lucky enough that I’m still losing weight which is crazy I started 115kg and I’m at 89kg. I need help is it too late to fix this? How do I get motivated again?

We can't motivate you for you. That's where YOU have to take the ball and run with it. Big thing is to not beat yourself up for the mis-steps. They happen, it's what you chose to do next that matters.

Missing going to the gym? Well, GO! Stop making excuses and go.
Not following your diet? Well, Stop it! Start following your diet and stop making excuses.

Push yourself! No one else is going to make you feel horrible because you ate crap and aren't doing what you know you are supposed to do. No one else is going to look back at you in the mirror and be disappointed because you didn't do what you knew you should have. Just do it.

You know you have to,
You know why you have to,
The ONLY way to get past feeling the way you do... is to do what you know you are supposed to.

So stop dwelling on the crap that happened yesterday, focus on what you need to do to be successful TODAY.

Did you have to follow insurance requirements fir a period of time before getting surgery? If so, that was a lot of hoops to jump through to let things get out of hand.

Reschedule your appointment with your team so you can check in.

Try focusing on one thing at a time, like improving your diet. You cannot out exercise poor eating habits. Even if you just tracked what you ate for a few days to see where you were, then made some changes gradually.

You will lose weight right now, but the reality is once the “honeymoon” phase is over you are likely to stop losing weight, and worse, regain weight lost. So there is a time period to implement healthy changes and make them part of your life to help increase your chances of success.

Good luck.

Don’t beat yourself up so much! Firstly get your (late) three month check booked in ASAP and get talking to your psychological support and see if you can’t bottom out why you are self sabotaging!

Everyone’s journey is different - with a different set of instructions from our WL team. I have never been told to track, my NUT believes life is for living so the occasional treat is fine, and he has said that the impact of diet and exercise in weight loss equation is around 80% diet, 20% exercise. food intake = impact on weight, Exercise = health benefits.

Good luck, write a list of what you need to tackle and work your way through.

Rosie is right, we do learn as we go in these proceedings, but do talk to someone, maybe you're your worst critic, I know I am, maybe you are still doing pretty okay after all. Don't sweat the small stuff, you'll tie yourself up in. " nots". this is not right, that is not right. You'll end up fraying your nerves.

It's obviously not too late, but you do need to get control over this. Start slow. You don't have to change every single thing over night. Start by tracking your food, good or bad. Then start by adding in your Vitamins. Then make another change when you're ready. Do it in the order you want. You know that you have to get a hold of this, or you wouldn't have posted here. We can't do it for you. It's up to you to make the changes and do what needs to be done. You can do it!

Agreed that small changes are key to continued success with habits surrounding food. But I would suggest starting with the Vitamins first THEN the tracking. Since ensuring you are getting all the vitamins you need is more important than tracking calorie counts right now.

I was so scared when i found out what happens to bariatric patients that don't take their Vitamins, it may not happen today or two years from now but eventually it will happen (teeth chipping or falling out, fragile bones etc. ... that should help motivate you.

I hope this helps motivate you a little, i know its super hard to change our bad habits, It will be a lifetime battle for most of us.

Good luck!!

I just have to correct 1 thing with this. "...it may happen today or two years from now but eventually it *MIGHT* happen...

I don't like the "will" in this sentence since that denotes a guaranteed outcome, there are folks that had RYN that don't take any extra Vitamins because their diet provides them with all they need. But most of us are more than likely going to be on them for the rest of our lives. So, the "will" usage is just too strong in my opinion for a potential outcome rather than a guaranteed one.

Sorry, it was just bugging me, nothing personal, I've got a little "spectrum" in me...

This isn’t a gift, it’s a tool. You deserve to have this. Let go of your shame. Today is a new day.
Take your Vitamins first. I fill a pill box every week to take my vitamins in. If I haven’t taken them all by bed, I swallow them down before I brush my teeth. I keep calcium chews in my purse, at my desk, in my spare purse. Once you do that you will feel better that you are on track. Make your doctor appointment. And maybe think about a support group. I’m also around 3-4 months and the weight loss is slowing. I don’t want to go back.

I work with a psychologist. He has told me since day 1 that the surgery is a tool ONLY and all the habits, triggers, and addictions will still all be present...they don't go away and unless you are self aware of the "why" it triggers it can be very hard. It's about working with a professional to figure it out. Talk to your doctors and get a great referral for a bariatric psychologist.

I just wanted to make one quick note about the Vitamins.

I think we probably all should have been on some kind of vitamins long before we started this process toward bariatric surgery..GPs just don't do the in depth tests these doctors do!

So agreed..start with at least taking the vitamins and then work with a professional or maybe a support group you can attend?

You can get there but just keep trying to put yourself in a position to help you succeed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
