narcotics and the band?

Recommended Posts

I am going through the process of trying to be banded, gathering the info, found out my insur covers it... and I dont know if having it done will have any adverse reactions to the meds I take. I was hit by a drunk driver and suffer slipped discs in my neck and nerve damange and am on a pain management agreement. I take 4-5 pills a day. Is this going to be a problem... with digestion... or whatnot?

It really depends on the exact medication. I had stomach stapling 20 yrs. ago and ever since then I cannot tolerate any type of medication with codeine in it. Now as a bandster I can take Demerol or Percocet but need to take a lot of gravol with each dose. Please discuss this ahead of time with the band surgeon and the doctor following your medications, I know we are told not to take anti-inflammatories.

NSAIDS (risk of ulceration) and enteric coated meds will probably be your biggest obstacles. Most other things can be crushed or have liquid alternatives. Post-op I was given Lortab elixir and something else that I'm drawing a total blank on... worked just as well as the pills ever did.

Discuss your concern with your surgeon when you get to the point of consultation.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
