Family Intervention to Stop VSG process

Recommended Posts

My Family came over yesterday to stage a Intervention to stop me from pursuing my weight loss surgery now that I have completed all requirements and scheduled for operation last week of September. This intervention last 3 hours. What I realize is that they really care about my well being and honestly they are SCARED . I educated them about the process. And emphasize the great possibilities with getting my health in order. Long story short their response derived from fear and love. Although it was much more drastically conveyed to the ears. I say this to say be educated in what your doing so you can educate others and also be firm in your decision. With that said this conversation will be the first and last time we discuss this (intervention) until after my surgery.
This subject MUST not be revisited prior too , the day of or minute prior to operation with family/friends who are “Unsure” and are not sharing experience in your body.
You have to make your own decision in life. And know what’s best for you.
This is YOUR LIFE. So live your best life.
My date is tentatively set for last week in September pending insurance review.

And I plan to make my own decision. I will continue to pray for all of us that we make the best decision whether to do it or not (surgery) but ultimately that all things work out for the goodness of God. That we will be healthy and while in Jesus Name Amen.

I wish you all the Best ,

Portia H

When I told my older (and wiser) sister she was all for it but asked me a few questions first about it I was sure and why I thought I needed to have this surgery. When I explained that I had thought long and hard on this (about 16 years worth) she is behind me all the way. She herself had Gastric Bypass quite sometime ago and has done a great job at keeping her weight off. Now, my younger sister isn't all for it not sure why exactly but she gave her opinion and I explained why I wanted to do this. Haven't spoken to her about it since.

Wow. An intervention seems so dramatic & drastic in my opinion. I am happy with how well you’ve handled it & everything you typed is correct & inspiring.

I can understand family/friends being scared and not fully understand these surgeries but I always wonder if they’d rather see a loved one suffer and be unhealthy and not happy as a fat person or try saving their life on the operating room table. That’s just my opinion.

Thanks for sharing your story

Maybe they, think Bariatric Surgery and Weight,Loss is a cult and you need protection from US. Well not me, unless you unleash my red-headed temper I'm mild and meek as a marshmallow. Just want get through my surgery and start on a new life of health. No threat to nobody, except my own fat and I'm going to obliterate that. But that is my own personal battle, one I will win. But convert anybody, nope, I'm Too Busy.

Your family is hardcore! Mine would never be so direct.

It sounds like you had all your facts and figures straight and were able to redirect a lot of their concern. I hope they are as active in supporting you through this as they were in expressing their fears, before you educated them!

The advice to educate ourselves and really know what we're talking about, with this, is really good. I mean, it'll only help us, to know what to expect and to be able to really weigh the risks and the rewards for ourselves! ❤️

@TropicalBeachDoll I can't believe they felt an "intervention" was necessary to stop you from doing something that you really benefit fit you and allow to live a longer, healthier life with better quality of living. You must have had the patience of a saint to be able to sit there for 3 hours and listen to them (well intended or not).

For the most part, I am keeping my decision to myself (aside from discussing it with my wife, parents and the HR department at my job--since I am going to need an accommodation so I can have the time off for the surgery and recovery, tests etc.) As far as family reactions go, my dad and wife had the same type of negative reaction at first that your family is having (mom is 100% behind my decision). My dad asked me a few questions about the procedures, but never gave me his opinion on whether I should go forward with this decision and, according to mom he is really uncomfortable with the idea of me having this surgery and won't discuss it with me (probably because my mother would kill him if he tried to dissuade me). My wife is really worried about the procedure (understandable) and whether it would be worth it in the end (it will be), but she read the information I gave her and is on board (sort of, but not really).

In the end, it's my body, my choice. While I value my wife and parents' opinions, this is my call to make and I made it. I know that having this surgery is going to make a huge positive difference on my life and health. I am not going to be one of those people that gives in to fear and/or family pressure, only to find myself in a terrible state of health 10 years from now wondering how my life would have been different had I had the surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
