Normal!

I have low blood pressure when my weight is in the overweight range or lower. It was in the normal range when I was obese. So for me, going forward it will be an everyday thing. If I get up too quickly I get dizzy. I just stop for 5 seconds or so and it passes.

The condition is called orthostatic or postural hypotension. Dizziness or light-headedness when standing up occurs as a result of abnormal blood pressure regulation. Normally, when people stand, gravity causes blood to pool in the veins of the legs and trunk. This pooling lowers the blood pressure and the amount of blood the heart pumps to the brain. Low blood flow to the brain causes the dizziness and other symptoms. To compensate, the nervous system quickly increases the heart rate and constricts blood vessels, which rapidly returns blood pressure to normal before symptoms can develop.

Prior to surgery, I was taking 2 types of prescription medicine for high blood pressure. As I was losing weight pre-op, I was able to cut my dosage in half. Then a couple weeks after surgery, I noticed my blood pressure was getting much lower, so I completely went off all my meds for high blood pressure. That condition went into remission and stayed there. I am now over 5 years post-op.

Although the culprit maybe low blood pressure (it is for me) don't forget to stay hydrated adequately as some common post surgical complications are usually dehydration related. Also hold on to something when you get up, don't fall!

CONGRATS!!!!

I had general dizziness around post op month 5, lasted until middle of month 6. Doc said it was “normal” and to increase my Water. All lab work came back normal. 🤷🏼‍♀️ None of that now though at almost 9 months!

I've been noticing the same lately and it has been increasing. Was once a day every few days, since last week or so it's been daily and at times multiple times a day and after I've taken my BP meds that day. I was put on 2 different meds to control it. I have been taking my BP and it has been within a normal range even hours after I've taken my meds I'll put a call into my PCP as I don't see her for another 2 months. Glad this topic came up. Thanks for all the responses

Dizziness started last week (6 weeks post surgery) and the doc said it was my low blood pressure (always have had) plus the quite fast weight loss leading my circulation to be a bit out of whack so its the orthostatic hypotension but ALL THE TIME. Anyone have any good tips on how to reduce it (its affecting me at work, I get dizzy just moving from my desk to a conference room and it takes a while to go away)- electrolytes in my Water or ???

Electrolytes/sodium and Water can help. I have had this problem even before surgery. (If I'm really angry, my BP is 110/70.) So drinking a lot of water helps but there has to be something to help your system retain it - either electrolytes or salt, otherwise you are just flushing everything from your system. Generation Ucann makes a zero calorie electrolyte power you can mix with water - both the berry and lemon/lime flavors are tasty.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
