Waking up from Surgery. Any Tips?

Recommended Posts

Believe it or not I did not feel anything after surgery they said that I would be drinking small amount of liquid I was asking for more drink when they added the grape juice. For a while I questioned if I had the surgery I saw the marks but no pain or any aftermath. So I guess I was one of the lucky ones. For those who are wanting to cheat and eat some of your old food, do it and just take a bit however if you over do it you will not want that type of food anymore. I was craving fried chicken breast and chopped BBQ. Ate less that a half of the breast and two forks of BBQ and I was done and that was too much so I know my limits and that is something everyone will need to learn and train your brain

Walk as much as possible. It will help with the nausea. I walked all around the hospital. Every twenty minutes. It makes you strong. Good luck to you.

Ask for all the warm blankets to hold against your belly. I tried not to bother my nurses. I know how busy they were but then one realized that my IV moved into my muscle and not my vain so that was a problem. . . Remind them that they’re awesome—they are and it’ll be a better stay for you as well. As soon as you feel you can, get up and walk as much as you can to deal with the gas pain.

As a Registered Nurse, I can tell you that means a lot.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
