Biotin & Hypothyroidism

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm working towards my gastric sleeve surgery and am already concerned about Hair loss due to thyroid issues and of course, slow regrowth and loss after surgery. I asked my doctor about Biotin, and she said that is one supplement that will interfere with thyroid level readings and suggested I not take it since we're trying to get my thyroid straight. Any other Hashimoto patients out there who have this issue? What were your options?

I cannot directly answer any questions about hashimoto however, the condition directly associated with Hair loss after major surgery and this one in particular is called telogen effluvium. Biotin is mostly an ineffective treatment for this anyway. Research it a bit and you will find more info on other promising Vitamin supplements

I have Hashimoto’s and the last thing I would do is take an ineffective supplement like Biotin, which can negatively affect thyroid tests.

I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis* It's hereditary, going back to my great-great grandmother and many other close female relatives.

Yes, Biotin will absolutely mess with your doctor's tests. Don't take it!

BEWARE OF BIOTIN: biotin can skew test results to be either falsely high or falsely low.

My body is still compensating (churning out some thyroid hormone), so my endocrinologist doesn't want me to take levothyroxine yet.

*Actually, it's not entirely accurate to refer to Hashimoto's as hypothyroidism since in its early stages and sometimes later you can teeter between hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Of course, since the body is destroying one's thyroid, one will ultimately and exclusively exhibit symptoms of hypothyroidism, but that's down the road for some (including me).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
