Stall right out of the gate?

Recommended Posts

So I had a great first week, down 13 lbs and now I’ve been hovering around the same weight for about 2 weeks. I know stalls are normal but figured it would take longer than a week to hit one. I’ve had some non-scale victories too, so I’m not too down yet but it is starting to get to me. Any suggestions on breaking out of a stall? Is it normal to have one this early? Just feeling a little like, why did I do all this if I could have lost the same amount on weight watchers? I’ve been increasing activity this last week, but not approved for much exercise yet. Getting 500-600 calories a day and plenty of Water. Thanks guys!

So instead of looking at it as 0 lost in two weeks, how about looking at it as 13 lbs lost in 3 weeks?

And I'm guessing if you had been able to find long term success with Weight Watchers, you probably wouldn't have needed WLS?

Losing quickly is great, of course. But the most important feature of WLS, IMO, is that it will help us keep the weight off long term.

All true, but still discouraging this early in the process. I had the surgery more for health issues than looking good. I was hoping more would come off early to keep me out of the hospital before slowing down to a slower pace. I guess I just would like to feel like this is normal and know how long this might last. It’s hard to see people lose 30 lbs + in the first month and not feel like I’m doing something wrong. Just looking for encouragement I guess.

I wouldn't assume your pace has slowed down. You're in a stall. It's normal and it will happen over and over again.

I REALLY think looking at the big picture with WLS is important.

Sure ... this is discouraging

But does it really matter, compared this this?

You can try to stop weighing yourself for a while. You don't *have* to especially if its stressful. You *have* to measure fluids, foods, take Vitamins, etc.

(Weighing is optional and not always an accurate representation of the changes occurring)

You are offically deputized to remind me,of this after surgery because I'm sure I'll whimper and whine about this someday.😝

I have the exact experience as yours... I went to my first post-op appointment (10 days post-op) with 13 lbs down. 3 weeks later i'm still only 15 lbs down. Buuuuut, I've noticed a change in my body, I can see that my neck and shoulders look slimmer, my upper belly has gotten smaller, so have my thighs.

So, don't worry about the weight, just keep focused on your Protein and Water intake and really do make an effort and get some walking into your day, it made all the difference for me.

Good luck!

Well, for all my whining I think my stall finally broke. I was down 3 lbs this morning! So I figure maybe I'll have a good week and then be prepared for this to happen again. Hopefully the next time I won't freak out! :) I am definitely seeing changes in my body and the way by clothes fit so that has kept me sane. I can fit into my favorite yellow skirt today and I'm not even muffin-topping! Thanks for the much needed reality check!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
