Think milk is giving me an upset tummy

Recommended Posts

I was never a big milk drinker before my bypass. I am day 12 today post op and doing liquid diet. Drinking skimmed milk with Protein powered or just plain. Had no problems until yesterday when I got tummy pains and an upset tummy, tried again today, Soup no problem, yogurt no problem but just drank my milk and pain again :(

Is there an alternative that we are allowed that is still high in protein? Im in the UK so food items might be different.

Would love your views on this please

Lactose intolerance post surgery is not uncommon. Do you have lactose-free milk available?

Or almond or coconut milk? They don't have as much Protein, but you could add a protein supplement to them.

Will check lactose free, thanks. Definitely have almond, that might be better. Thanks for that, certainly can’t stomach any more cows milk 🤮 what are Protein supplements? Like tablets or powder?

I become intolerant of whey Protein about 3 weeks post op. It started causing extreme nausea. Something to consider.

After my gastric bypass surgery, I became lactose intolerant. Whenever I drank milk, I experienced an upset stomach quickly followed by diarrhea. This condition lasted for around 2 months and then disappeared. Also beware some Protein Drinks contain lactose.

thanks everyone for advice. I have just ordered some lactose free milk and some 'free from everything' apart from protein! Protein powder, hopefully this should sort the tummy issues. thanks guys

Same situation with milk. Almond is great in my shakes. My doc also mentioned a milk called Farelife. Not sure if thats even an option in the UK but maybe something similar maybe easier on your stomach. Good luck!

It took me 6 months post-op to start drinking plain WATER! Every single sip of Water turned into a pain. Surprisingly, if I just add a little bit of crystal light powder into my water, or just a lemon juice - stomack reacted perfectly well.

So no surprise milk is no longer tolerated in your specific case - post-WLS stomack is uncharted waters :))

Ooo and I used to ❤cheese. I did try mozzerella, not a Happy time, popped right back up my throat and I had chewed well.

I had a similar issue for my first few months post-op. Yogurt was fine. Cottage cheese? Fine! Milk to mix a Protein Shake? Bad. So bad. I've taken to mixing my shakes with almond milk. I can have regular milk now without getting sick, but sometimes it doesn't sit right.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
