Gym post-surgery - how long did you wait?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I'm on day 7 post-op and I'm getting excited for when I can sign up for a gym and start working toward some fitness goals. I'm curious how long you all waited before returning to/starting to go to the gym after surgery. I'm feeling impatient to get back to it but also don't want to sign up and then go and realize I'm not ready yet. I also have a couple good coupons/offers for signing up with no fees, so I'm trying to estimate how long it'll be before I'm back and if/when to take advantage of them.

Thanks!

I started working out regularly at 4 weeks. But I’m a beginner so it’s nothing too strenuous. Treadmill, light weight lifting.

My wait time is 6 weeks 😩 I love the gym. Strength training, running and stair master! I'm only 5 days post so I'm walking every day until I can walk for 2 hours. 15- 30 the first week 30-45 the second week 45-1 the third week 1-115 the fourth week 115-130 fifth week and 130-2 the sixth week.

I waited 6 weeks. Started off slow with stationary bike for 30 min then gradually increased to stairs and treadmill. Just remember to take your time and do what you can. I wouldn't try pushing myself hard in the gym until 6 months post op. I'm 10 months post op and a size 4. The weight will come off.

Check with your bariatric team. I was allowed to take walks for the first 6 weeks.. had to wait until they gave me the OK to go back to the gym.

Only walking allowed for the 1st six weeks as well than I can get into working out. They want to make sure our bodies are healing properly so we have to take it easy for the time being.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
