day 10 and if I don't have an espresso soon, there will be hell to pay.

Recommended Posts

Hi! Love you crazy kids.

Anyhow. How serious is the no caffeine thing? Is one espresso really going to kill me? Had my surgery 10 days ago and I can tolerate literally hundreds of ounces of Water per day. I'd be happy to drink extra water to make up for any dehydration as a result of my caffeine intake. But seriously. I need some zing to do my job.

Thoughts?

If you are on full liquids you can have some coffee . Just don’t overdo it

I was told the caffeine is too acidic and can cause post pone healing. I am sure someone is going to come behind me and act like I'm an idiot. But honestly it's up to you if you do I wouldn't do it often and would maybe drink some milk or something with it. But it's up to you listen to your pouch if you drink it and it doesn't sit well try again later.

You could skip the expresso part and just drink regular coffee and cream so less caffeine but some

Ask your team when you can resume caffeinated beverages. I made the mistake of drinking caffeinated espresso 2.5weeks after surgery (from Wholefoods so you know it was single source, fair trade and strong AF, but oddly enough not as strong as an Italian americano go figure ) I added Premier Protein shake to it about 5 mins in I had the shakes, heart racing all while walking in midtown Manhattan. Espresso is crazy sometimes.

Just so you know, one shot of espresso actually has less caffeine than a cup of coffee! It's just more concentrated - so if you had 8 oz of espresso it'd have more than 8 oz of coffee, but since you usually get a 1-2oz shot of espresso you're actually getting less caffeine. I believe one shot of espresso=20-40mg whereas a cup of coffee is around 100-140mg.

Love the data!

I like coffee in the morning and espresso for afternoon/nighttime pick me ups. My job requires me to be pretty "on"- sometimes at 2 or 3 AM- so a midnight espresso gets me together without keeping me up all night.

Caffeine can deplete Calcium, so if you choose to drink caffeinated espresso/coffee, make sure to take extra calcium. coffee has a pH of 5 regardless of caffeine content, and stomach acid is between pH 3 and 4, so sip away. You are more likely to get jittery from the caffeine hitting the intestine quickly than getting too much acid from drinking it.

@nevertoolate . Head on over to Matt Z's Confessionals. HELL accepts check, cash or debit card. Now you won't feel so bad if you decide to cheat. (By the way, if a little espresso is the worst you can do in terms of cheating, you're in good shape.)

I am hoping this is the case for me. I definitely rely on the caffeine - I am currently nursing a massive headache. But I absolutely love the taste and the ritual of coffee. Hopefully I can just go with decaf from now on and I will be counting the days until I can even have that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
