Hot flash after food

Recommended Posts

I’m just over 8 months post op. And I think I’ve found one of “those” foods you react to funny no matter how far out you are. For me, it’s ground beef! I can usually get 3 oz of lean ground beef in before I start hot flashing and sweating! It’s intense. Lasts about 15 minutes.

Anyone have a reaction like this to any other foods? I’m just glad there are other Protein sources! 😂

Sounds like dumping! Beef always messes with me...but I ate curry chicken once did it to me, and other dairy items (cooked and refined with lots of sugar of course)

I feel like that every time I eat. I do not feel sick or anything. I lay down to rest for 15 to 30 minutes then I feel fine. I wonder if my body is just working hard to digest.

Or its the rush, the swooshing through,of semi-digested foodstuffs, if you are a bypass( which I SHALL IN A MONTH be) you no,longer have a regulatory sphincter to slow gown things. If you are a VSG, instead of a football to digest with, you have a large hollow bamboo tube/garden hose thickness apparatus, so things can swish at a semi-breakneck speed also. We or our insurance " paid the choice" now we all "reap the whirlwind" and it the best of times IT is SOMETHING to get used to. How did I get so smart this soon? Reading, listening to veterans stories, empathizing, sympathizing and " there but for the Grace of God go I" in equal portions, and lastly a whole lot of love for All.😛❤😛

@Frustr8, it definitely felt like a swoosh, but I’m VSG. I really only get it with ground beef too which is crummy! Thank goodness I’m more of a chicken and fish fan...but it was on sale 😂

Beef is hard for me to digest as well. I rarely eat it now. It feels like a huge harsh lump and so uncomfortable. I eat chicken, turkey, pork steak, fish...

Weird and a shame that beef would cause dumping.

What kind are you using? (96/4 84/15 etc) and are you making burgers or something? Mixing it with anything unusual?

It sounds very much like dumping, it's just strange that a lean Protein would cause it

96/4 with salt, pepper, and a “all purpose” spice I use in everything. This happens any time I try ground beef so I shouldn’t be surprised! I just thought after many months of other Protein sources (and a sale at the store!) I could try again. But fish and chicken are good enough for me!

I have the hot flashes/sweats a lot after I eat. I am 3.5 months out from VSG. Just thought it was a side effect of the surgery.

This was somewhat common for me during early post op too. If it continues, I’d chat with your bariatric team.

I only get this feeling now with ground beef so my team tells me it’s likely a food I’ll just have difficulty with. And if I want to avoid the feeling, eat something else! 😂

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
