Doctors who can't see beyond a patient's weight could miss other conditions

Recommended Posts

I fortunately never experienced really any medical discrimination due to my weight. Every single doctor would always MENTION my weight, but always listened to me and treated my problems and didn't blame them on my weight. The only time anyone ever said anything that upset me was when my OBGYN mentioned that being obese means I would struggle to have kids (this was during the time I was baby crazy and actually wanted one). I cried for like 3 days straight. I don't even want kids anymore so whatevaaaa. But it's pretty annoying when every doctor points out your size. Like, yes, I realize I am obese. I see myself every day, thanks.

When I was diagnosed with pseudotumor, the neuroopthamologist said if I lost 10% of my body weight it would go away. Except, before I saw him, I had lost 30% of my body weight and still had it. I told him that and he didn't believe me. He is still convinced it will go away when I lose more weight. I dunno if it will or not. I also have Mirena which causes it (class action lawsuits going on now), and he refused to investigate that possibility. I had the Mirena out for a few months, but decided to put it back because periods suck.

When I was 140lbs doctors would shame me for my weight constantly because I was considered overweight for my height by like 5lbs. It made me really depressed and contributed to my eating disorders, eventually ACTUALLY creating the obese-me.

OMG I am so so sorry this happened in your life and to someone you loved so much. There is so much they disregarded as unimportant. And all because he was "obese".

I had many doctors discretely mentioning weight loss... but I was most disturbed by two doctors. One was at work, they give us check ups every year... so when I went to see him he pointed his finger to me and said how did this happened? I think I went red with rage... I mean there are so many ways to mention that issue... he chose the worst.
Also when I was searching for a bariatric surgeon the first one I visited when saw my helmet he commented you ride a moto? And when I said yes he said poor moto... wtf he is bariatric surgeon and says such things! Of course I left running (as much as I could by that time lol).

Hopefully never had anything that was misdiagnosed due to my weight!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
