Im already over a year out so i just stay away from all bread, fried, sugars, and starches. I was just curious since Beans are a starch and they are ok if sweet potatoes would be.

They were on my plan since stage 2, I don't eat them often like once every month if that (because everything in moderation, right)I eat legumes more often, I'm only 9 months out but at a year out I can't imagine any vegetables being off limits, especially in moderation. Its not the same as a white potato after all, but consult your NUT to be certain. They do push the Protein first then vegetables carbs last motto so by that standard you really can't have a ton.

If you have room for a starchy veg, sweet potatoes are a good one. Just don’t junk it up with butter, brown sugar...you know the drill. ;)

Most Beans are counted in most programs as a Protein. Sweet potato’s are counted as a starch.

My nutritionist says they are fine, as long as you eat your Protein and veggies first and eat them in moderation. If you think they would be a "trigger" food for you then I would stay away from them. I think that's the bigger issue, knowing what triggers you. I am speaking from a pre-surgery perspective though. I am capable of eating carbohydrates and even some sugary foods in moderation but here are certain things (many things actually) that I really can't have in the house. Sometimes it doesn't even make any sense....for example, I can eat a small single ice cream bar without issue. If I have a single bite of an ice cream sandwich however, I will not stop until the box is empty, I feel sick and I hate myself.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
