Question : Do anyone planning on seeing your dietitian for the next few months after wls?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm thinking about seeing a dietitian for 12 more months.(More money I'm worth it!) I'm 5 days post op VSG. I want to take advantage of the first 12 months when you lose most of your weight. I'm thinking about getting a new dietitian that didn't put me on a diet to shrink your liver. I'm trying to see what's going to work for me. Aug. 26 Will be one month out that's when I can start going back to the gym and my weight loss journey begins for me mentally. Is there anybody will continue seeing a dietitian?

Unless you are really not sure of what you can eat then I would not bother. She is probably going to say the same thing she has already told you and make you log your food which I hate logging.

My program allows free visits with their dietitians for life if you had surgery within their program. I only live about 5 minutes away from where they are located so I have taken full advantage of this perk and meet with them monthly and will continue to do so as long as I'm seeing a benefit. I found it very helpful during the first 6 months because I was progressing through new foods and increasing my quantities and could talk to them about how that was going and ask questions. Now that I'm 18 months out my appointments are really just a check-in and a way to keep myself accountable - much like the weight watchers meetings I used to go to back in the day. My vote is yes, take full advantage of the resources you have available (assuming you have the time and money of course).

I haven't seen a dietician since my first required visit. I don't like hovering professionals who use one-size-fits-all menus. Not only am I a scratch cook, but the cuisine in my household uses ingredients unfamiliar to my dietitian. If I have a question about Vitamins that might be something worth a visit, but I've read extensively and asked questions of others about my vitamins and other supplements, so I feel prepared. Honestly, she hasn't answered a single question easily available elsewhere and for free.

My doctor told me yesterday during my 6weeks post-op visit that I'm doing great (38lbs lost). I haven't started an exercise program yet because of cramps, but that's the area I'd seek more help with. In other words, if I had to decide where to put my money, I'd invest it in a personal trainer and not in a dietitian.

As for you being worth it, you are ALWAYS WORTH IT!

My dietician and I set up appointments for a year out so I can get tips on dealing with the holidays (Halloween through New Years) and any other issues along the way. She not only provides recipes and advice, she offers body positive encouragement and meditation ideas, deep breathing, and other calming exercises.

She's also been through the weight loss journey, so she'd good at grounding me when I get stressed.

Yes , on an as needed basis , mostly through email, in person when on a long plateau or I want to travel comfortably or try something completely new. I want to make sure everyone is aware of what I'm doing so I don't show up with a mystery ailment I could have easily prevented by a little consultation , or reevaluate my goals

I've got some check ins... but so far they have been overly useless.
Your money might be better spent on a personal trainer, they do nutrition as well usually and they will assist with your working out to REALLY help you shed those pounds. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

My nutritionist was useless too. It was stuff a high school student in fitness/nutrition class would know. Google was more helpful :P

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
