Hebruiser 1 Posted July 31, 2018 Hi everyone, I'm a first time poster, pre-op patient here in Raleigh, NC. I am about to be scheduled for DS in the next month or so and have a long-shot question about AFTER surgery symptoms. Since I was a teen, I have suffered with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) pretty much from the crotch up. I am heat intolerant and will sweat even in the cold of the winter. I have to have a fan on me pretty much all the time or the lack of air movement overheats me and I am soon drenched from head to...almost toe. My father is, or was, the same way. His appendix burst years ago and he had most of his small intestines removed as a result of the sepsis; lo and behold, he no longer has sweating issues. And this guy, at his normal rate, would bend down to tie his shoes and come up literally dripping with sweat. I am much the same, much to my chagrin. Anyone deal with similar issues? Did it change at all for the better or worse after surgery? I've had my thyroid checked and there's no biological (at least not an obvious) reason for this, and I'm sure that some of it is anxiety, but I'm curious to know if anyone out there has heat/sweating issues that have either gotten better or worse since surgery. 1 Frustr8 reacted to this
James Marusek 5,244 Posted July 31, 2018 Sounds like me. I would drive with the windows down even in winter when it was snowing. The problem disappears after my RNY gastric bypass surgery 5 years ago. So you might experience the same effect with the duodenal switch. Now it is a little in the reverse direction. Fat is a very good insulator. After I lost the weight, I am more sensitive to the cold. I have to bundle up sometimes when I go outside in the cold weather. Thank goodness someone invented hand warmers. 1 1 GreenTealael and Frustr8 reacted to this
RickM 1,752 Posted July 31, 2018 It is hard to say how much you may be "hyper" as in a metabolic problem above and beyond just being a fat guy like the rest of us have been, but it is quite common with all of the weight that we carry. As with James, that usually disappears as the weight comes off. I haven't used anti-persperants for years and even after a moderately hard workout in the gym it's no problem (was a bit of sweating a couple weeks ago when the AC as off in the weight room, though!) I suspect that this next winter you will probably be cold, as you still have the cardiovascular system of a 445 pounder when you are 345 and falling, and the following winter will be worse, though that does seem to even out some after a few years of adaptation. 1 Frustr8 reacted to this
disco stu 73 Posted August 9, 2018 I'm not sure I qualify as having hyperhidrosis, in that I don't sweat too much while inactive , but I have always sweated more than the average guy when playing sports or working out. Currently, I'm the guitarist in a cover band, and after two or three songs, my shirt is drenched. I'm about 3 months out from DS - down 30lb or so - and no change....I'm still a sweaty beast on stage. YMMV 1 Frustr8 reacted to this
cdriver422 11 Posted September 23, 2018 I had my DS done 9/12. I’ve always been hot natured, like shorts in winter. I’ve had my first “cold flash” this week. It’s been nice. LOL. I hope you have the same luck. BTW I had my procedure at Rex in Raleigh, where are you going to? 1 Frustr8 reacted to this
Hebruiser 1 Posted November 3, 2018 Well, I am almost a month out from surgery and I have yet to break a sweat. I used to have to have a fan on me all the time, but I do actually get chilly now. Who knew?
