Recommended Posts

Hi all I am scheduled for surgery sometime in January. I am starting to get things together so that I am not rushed. I tend to wait until the last minute for everythimng but I want to be sure I am ready in plenty of time so I have less to freak out about.

What do I need to do before I go. Anyone with a time line that would be great. Anyone with a to-do list or a list of what to pack. Gosh I am rambeling aren't I? HELP.....:help:

You should go check out the LapBand FAQ and References Forum

Also, there are a couple of threads floating around out there with more recent lists, here's the links:

http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f84/preop-shopping-list-updated-prices-42494/

Just an FYI, the search function here is great, I almost always use the Advanced Search and then look for thread titles only. For these I looked for "list" and poof! There they were. It's great when you want to know something NOW and don't want to wait for someone to respond to a thread. Also, there's loads of great info out there from people who have gone through it already.

Relax, you have time to get organized. It isn't that difficult and you don't need too many things. Comfy clothes for post surgery, slip on shoes (bending over and tying laces can be painful), a heating pad, chewable tylenol, gas-x chewable, get any meds in liquid form or chewable (altho my Dr gave me pills and they went down fine) and then look at what you need for food, depending on what your Dr.'s diet suggests. I'd take a look at the list and just add from there. Are you getting the surgery done locally or are you traveling some place?

Hi, good idea to make sure you have everything you need for 1 week...before you have surgery.

Foods, clothes washed, chores done, bills paid, etc. As far as something specifically for the band...

some go crazy w/ lists... but keep it simple. Your doc should give you all your scripts before surgery so you can have them filled before.

Since you will be on liquids, get your favs.

Other than that...you are good to go. You'll be up in no time.

The only things I took to the hospital with me were the clothes I wore (a loose dress, a leisure bra, panties and slip-on shoes) and a pillow to cushion my belly on the ride home. I came home the same day.

  • LOOSE pull-on pants
  • Slip on shoes (so no leaning over to tie)
  • a small travel pillow to hold against you when you leave the hospital & ride home in the car
  • Leave jewelry at home
  • If you wear contacts I'd forgo them for the hospital trip. Wear your glasses or go without (you won't be driving anywhere anyway)

...well, that's my two cents worth

my 2 cents, I read the list posted on this forum somewhere (maybe the one Faith linked).

I packed so much stuff.. toothbrush, change of clothes, changes of underwear, gasX, pepto, uhm.. a big bag full of junk!!

I was in the hospital approx 27 hours..

When I woke up, I slooowly put on my change of underwear (they had put me in a diaper for TOM), I was dying to brush my teeth.. so I did.. and nothing else in my bag was ever touched. They wouldn't let me have anything!! No Water, no ice, no Jello, nothing. I don't know why (I think the nurses kept getting confused and thought I had RNY). I was begging for ice chips at one point, so they gave me the bottom of a dixie cup worth and said that's all I'm allowed to have. But I never changed my clothes, or needed any of the other stuff I brought.

I think some of that stuff is to have when you get home but it isn't always made clear on the list. I would not take a heating pad to the hospital, for example, unless I was spending the night. But wouldn't they have heating pads there?

I took the clothes I wore and a pillow. :P

Maybe, I haven't looked at it since surgery date. I just remember cramming all kinds of stuff in my bag and on our way home I thought about how I didn't need any of it.

They wouldn't let me put on my PJ's either, so pff.

I ended up wearing a housedress to & from the hospital.

Oh yes, the pillow was good for the car ride!

I didn't bring it in the hospital, but was 3 hours from home.. so on the car ride, it was a necessity.

Thank you ladies so much. Luckily I no longer need to worry about TOM visiting. So I won't have that bothersome thing to worry about.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
