SLOW or NO Weight Loss one month post-surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am a first-time poster who's searching for answers. I am almost 30 days post-sleeve surg and am not losing weight, despite limiting my calories to 700 and taking the Vitamins. The twenty pounds I lost occurred in the first two weeks and since then I've inexplicably gained three pounds. I use the Bariastic app to log every morsel and sip and try to hit the Water, Protein daily goals. I ate more and lost more doing Weight Watchers! I am not exercising much but shouldn't I lose even without the gym? Frustrating. The doctor says to just stick with it, but I sure would like some suggestions from the wisdom of this forum. Thanks for listening to me whine, everybody.

Search the forum for "Stall". They are very common. Your body will stall often during weight loss as it adjusts itself, etc etc etc etc. So many posts about stalls.

Completely normal, as frustrating as it is. Keep to your plan and stay off the scale for now. Remember, you can still be loosing inches without seeing it reflect on the scale. If you haven’t taken your measurements, do it now. It will safe you from feeling a lot of defeat later when you stall. I’m 6 months post op and I stall almost every other week. Even after you loose a substantial amount of weight, stalls will be hard. It’s a part of the process. Just remember, they say it takes 12-18 months, and it can truly take that long. But I try and remember how long it would have taken me to loose 127lbs on my own, not 6 months, I can tell you that.
Hang in there!

Eat more. Starvation level calories cause your body to halt weight loss to survive.

Sounds counter intuitive, I know, but the reason you lost more with weight watchers is that you were eating a more reasonable number of calories and not setting off physiological defense mechanisms that safeguard against starvation.

You can try upping calories to 900 for a few days, increase Water beyond the 64ozs, and sometimes it just takes more time. It's more like a long distance jog than the 50yd dash.

Is it considered a 'stall' after only two weeks? I feel as if the first 20 lost was Water weight or something, and that I've never really gotten started with actual weight loss. Thanks for the responses.

I don't think losing 20 lbs since surgery is slow to no weight loss?

There is a physical limit to how much weight you can lose in an amount of time. You dropped 20 lbs, now your body is adjusting, and you will start losing again.

I had the exact same problem! I dropped 20 pounds in about 8 days and then stalled for two weeks.

I started walking more, moving more in general, and it started dropping again. But it was a frustrating two weeks! (Plus it was 100*+ outside!)

it’s a marathon for sure 🙂

Griffon,

I am right there with you. I had my Gastric Sleeve 6/22/18 and I lost 15 lbs on the pre-op diet and then was 300 lbs day of surgery. I came home and I had gained to 309 from fluids because I was so sick from anesthesia and morphine. At my 2 weeks post op I weighed 285 (down 24 lbs.) I have been at 285 for 2 weeks. Yesterday I seen my surgeon for my 1 month appointment and he was very happy. He stated it is very normal for your body to stall like everyone is saying after a large amount of weight is lost right after surgery. Your body will stall and then acclimate and then begin to lose. I have not had any junk food or carbs, I am stickily eating Protein or Protein Shake with my Miralax and walking. He said I should start to see about 10-15 lbs a month after the initial weight loss. Believe it or not this morning I was 283. Best of luck and try not to get frustrated. :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
