Stomach ache every time I drink anything

Recommended Posts

I'm 11 days post op from bypass and having a hard time drinking anything. The first few sips I get a horrible nausea and aches. It passes in a few minutes but makes me hate drinking. Does anyone else have this?

I had this at the hospital, but it did go away after a few days. The doc said it is the body getting used to the new way the body works. Personally I thought it was baloney, but either that did happen, or something else did because now I can consume liquids twice as fast as my surgeon said without problems. Yes, if I am-time for my liquids all day, then after several hours, I will need to stop for a while because I feel like I filled up my intestines (Even if this is not what is really happening LOL)

Try and stick it out, but if you think you are getting dehydrated or the pain isn't getting any better, maybe call your physician's office? That's why they get paid for and they're used to it, so make use of it if you need to!

I am coming up on a month post-op and I still get that feeling, especially the first few sips in the morning, or if the liquid is REALLY cold. I have found that plain Water tends to cause it more for me then if I use a SF drink mix, or a Powerade Zero but I think that must just be in my head (?)

It is tough to push through that ache, for me it feels like a clenched fist in my gut. Maybe play with temperatures a little to see if that helps. I know I get it every single time I buy a water out of the cooler at a store or shop because they are so cold. And then play with different liquids. I crave plain water, most of these drink mixes are too strong in flavor for me now, but I have to put something in my water to keep from cramping up so I get crystal light in the squeeze bottle so I can control how much flavor I add. It is crazy but adding something to my water has almost completely stopped the cramping through out the day!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
