Old school said no caffeine because of increased heart burn and dehydration. Now it depends on the doctors and nutritionist. My only restriction was it had to be black. Lord I hope this is the case with my surgeon because I can't survive without coffee. My family will ban me from functions. My priest will kick me out of Mass. There is just no way I can be a tolerable human without coffee. 1 YeahOkay31 reacted to this
Frustr8 7,886 Posted August 9, 2018 Banned from Mass for Bad Behavior. Ooh we can't have that! Give that woman a caffeine infusion!☕ 1 Marisol Unda reacted to this
CrankyMagpie 509 Posted August 9, 2018 My surgeon allows coffee. "You can have it the day after surgery if you want!" said the PA. I pointed out that I'm not going to want it that day (because nausea), and she agreed. I don't want to have to fight the headache on top of all the other pain, so I'm choosing a week between now and the surgery and going cold turkey. (I'll cut down on caffeine a little between now and then, too.) One other benefit is that cutting out caffeinated coffee will also help me get enough Water in, since that's one less non-hydrating beverage that I can replace with hydration. I dearly love coffee, though, so I'll probably drink Decaf when my stomach is calm enough for it.
krosevf30 15 Posted August 10, 2018 I have been told to drink Decaf - Starbucks has a decent one for kuerigsSent from my VS501 using BariatricPal mobile app
bookworm1983 28 Posted August 11, 2018 My NUT said I coud try coffee after my 3 month visit but to introduce it slowly. I'm a Starbucks girl and order 2 shots of blond espresso over ice in a venti cup and then I pour my Protein Shake over it (premier Protein Caramel). It dilutes the coffee and adds great flavor so I do not need to add any cream or sugar. It takes me a little while to drink it but all the ice melts and it is 24 ounces of liquid every morning! 3 BostonWLKC, GreenTealael and KRush88 reacted to this
Lily’sMom 28 Posted August 14, 2018 I kind of lost my love for coffee after surgery. So I pretty much skip it except when I occasionally need the caffeine. 1 Marisol Unda reacted to this

I also like the blonde (veranda not willow) and I have an Italian manual espresso maker, I buy bags of it and save soooo much coin making my own, and It's always strong enough, none of that double shot nonsense... 1 Marisol Unda reacted to this
Carol Chris 3 Posted August 14, 2018 My gastric surgeon told me newer research has shown coffee is an appetite stimulant and for that reason should be avoided if possible, but he conceded a single cup now and again should be okay. 1 1 GreenTealael and AEdoesRnY reacted to this

Leia 75 Posted August 14, 2018 My program has decaff as okay post op. I had a decaff Americano yesterday and felt fine. I think I will probably stick to only decaff for a long while though, I definitely dont need more stomach acid or anything. I thought coffee tended to suppress apatite, not stir it up? 1 GreenTealael reacted to this
LaLaDee 519 Posted August 15, 2018 I avoided coffee for 9 months after surgery. I then introduced it, promising i would only have 1 or 2 a week. You guessed it, I’m having it daily now. Lol. I had two today!! My reason for abstaining was because of a dangerous addiction to Diet Coke. I want to avoid Diet Coke, not because of the bubbles (I’ll drink champagne and some carbonated drinks) but because I think the artificial sugar makes me want real sugar. My surgeon and nutritionist never warned me off coffee. I think some studies may suggest that coffee may not dehydrate as much as previously thought because you build up a tolerance. https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/theconversation.com/amp/health-check-does-caffeine-cause-dehydration-73965 1 2 Leia, Marisol Unda and GreenTealael reacted to this
MIZ60 1,291 Posted August 15, 2018 Drank regular coffee (my beloved Columbian Supreme from Sams for the Keurig) up until the day before surgery then changed to Green Mountain Decaf for two weeks post op. At my 2 week post op the PA approved me going back to my regular coffee and I have had absolutely no problems. I do use about 3 ounces of Premier Protein shake instead of the half and half and Davinci Syrup I used before. 1 1 GreenTealael and mandmom reacted to this

GreenTealael 25,439 Posted August 16, 2018 Slightly on topic slightly off topic: Yesterday I used lower quality coffee to make espresso by accident (it may have been Decaf but not the point) and I threw it away immediately. If I'm going to risk ruin, its going to be worth it. I'm made a fresh cup with the good stuff. 1 Marisol Unda reacted to this
