I have an appointment 8/1/19 with the bariatric surgeon. Has anyone had any other abdominal surgeries? I am worried that he will not do my surgery because in 2012 I had several tumors removed from my stomach. I am so excited to finally be able to do this for myself. I am 61 years old my health is not that great mostly due to obesity.

I wasn't worried that I couldn't get the surgery but that it might have to be done open not laparoscopically. Prior to WLS I had 3 c-sections, a Tummy Tuck and an umbilical hernia repair. There were no issues I was able to have the surgery and it was laparoscopic, just 5 little incisions.

Definitely talk to your surgeon about it. I had discussed my previous surgeries with mine and he was able to reassure me before hand that there was very little chance that the surgery would have to be performed open.

Good luck

Thank you so much. Hopefully I will be able to have surgery the first week of November.

@shortmocha that is comforting, I won't worry so much about my abdominal scar. Thanks for posting!👍😛

I had 4 abdominal surgeries before my rny. I had scar tissue but he said it just took a little more time but no problems.

I had previous surgery scars from years gone by. I had open surgery for my bypass. Seriously it is nothing to be worried about. In some ways it was easier - none of the post-laparoscopic surgery gas pain for example! And my recovery was real quick.

I had gallstones last month - oddly enough after saying that too would have to be open - they did it laparoscopically!!

In terms of recovery for the two - not much difference. Longer in hospital for the open bypass, a couple of nights sleeping in a recliner before I lay flat, but all up pretty ok...

Previous surgeries likely means adhesions and scarring. I've never seen a case where it couldn't be done because of that. It will. Absolutely take longer (the actual surgery) but unless your insides are an outrageous disaster a good surgeon can do it laparscopic.

That said I have seen them abandon a bypass to do a sleeve instead because of extreme adhesions. So that's a possibility

This is all good to hear . I was worried because early last year I was going to go to Mexico to have this surgery, the surgeon there told me he would not do this surgery because I had those tumors removed from my stomach. I am hoping he denied me because of not really having follow up when I got back to the states but I'm not sure about that. This was Dr. Alverez

It's possible that being a cash pay you're a more complicated case, making you less attractive as a patient.

Were you going for a bypass or sleeve

I was going for the sleeve, The insurance I have now is going to pay for the surgery. So I will be having it in Jonesboro Arkansas now. I'm a little nervous but excited/

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
