After having my EGD my doctor pointed out that I have a fatty liver. I know the liver rests on the stomach and it can be an issue. During my nutrition class i was informed that those with a fatty liver may have to do an extra week of the pre op "liver shrinking" diet. Has anyone else run into this issue?

It is common, but ask if you can get a head start and start shrinking your liver ahead of time. If you follow the less rigorous preop diet (shake for meals 1&2, Protein vegetables meal 3) for longer ahead of surgery, you can get a running start instead if being miserable all at once,
My surgeon did not require preop diet, my liver was fine, he was comfortable either way but I put myself in one anyway. Just for like a week I think.

I don't know anything about the extra week you might be facing, but that extra week would be worth it since, according to this article, bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for the most common cause of a fatty liver.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is becoming one of the most common causes of liver disease in the western world. The most significant risk factors are obesity and the metabolic syndrome for which bariatric surgery has been shown to be an effective treatment.

Several drugs also cause fatty liver, including:

Fatty liver is usually found or suspected when:

  • Abnormal liver tests are found on routine blood testing
  • Fat is seen ultrasonographically when ultrasonography of the abdomen is performed for other reasons, for example, the diagnosis of gallstones
  • Infrequently when the liver is enlarged on physical examination of a patient

Dump the sugar and simple carb laden foods, no soda, alcohol, added sugar, etc and then add some exercise.

Do all that first if you have not already done that. I made all those significant small changes first, then went harder. The week I attended the seminar I ditched the diet coke, done. Then let go of Pasta, rice, any bread except rye and then only one piece toasted once a day, etc. These changes are pretty much permanent. To go hardcore to get to your most important goal - which is surgery scheduled - you may need to go lean Protein and vegetables sooner - which is the lifestyle we all have after surgery anyway. You don't need the shake routine until your doc says do the shake routine, unless for you that seems easier. Me - I would rather have tuna or chicken than a shake. Good luck.

Agree with all above. My dr. and the weight management hospital work in conjunction and require patients do a 2 week pre-op diet before surgery to shrink the liver. Gonna just put this here, if you want to look at it :) Good luck to you!

And that is one of the main reasons I'm starting a 4 week prep diet August 1st for a September 5th surgery.😛❤😛

Just getting into my 2nd week of my 2 week preop diet. Its not so bad. Been drinkn ton of water(80-120 oz/day). No hunger pains. Surgery 7/30.

Did your surgeon put you on the 4 week for fatty liver? Or are you going the extra mile? Congratulations on your surgery date! With that prep diet i'm sure your going to do great.

I got almost the same paper at my nutrition class. I'm glad to hear that. Good for you! Hopefully I have the same results. I struggle getting all my Water in.

@actuallylosingit Thank you for asking. Actually my Bariatric Hospital at the Ohio State University gave me the option of perusing a 2, a 3, or a 4 week program. The reasons I chose 4 weeks:
1. My surgery will. be easier on my body
2 . A smaller liver will make it easier for my surgeon to perform his magic, and in many ways the surgery is magical, it gives me a very good tool for weight loss.
3. I will heal better . At 72 there is an inherent,probability of a slower paced heal time than, say a 20 or 30 year old.
4. I am having a RnY bypass, the more difficult of the 3 most popular surgeries, yet the GOLD STANDARD
5. This will be a one-time occurance in my life, no opportunity at my age for a
DO OVER
6. After all the years of self-loathing I do love myself now. And since I do now LOVE ME , I will show my body the respect it deserves by giving,it the ONE BEST CHANCE to be ALL IT CAN BE and give it an opportunity to live longer. For all its failings, for all the mistakes we have done through years, although it could now be judged an ANTIQUE it has served me well and is ORGINAL EQUIPMENT, in these days of "Patch Jobs" THAT IS PRETTY DOG-GONE COOL.
And although a prediet can be Dietary Purgatory , I can And will stick it out for my body's Ultimate Benefit!😛👍😛🌈😷

Yes I had to do a liquid diet for 2 weeks.I stuck to it exactly and lost 40 pounds in 2 weeks.Its imperative to do it because that area will be where the surgery will happen.The liquid diet was difficult the first week,but then it was a breeze.

Thanks for sharing! Mine is typically a two week clear liquid diet so i believe i will be on a 3 week clear liquid. I'm glad to hear the second week was easier. Great job! 40 pounds in 2 weeks is quite a bit of weight to lose.

And Missouri -Lee's Summit I just discovered a medical study,they believe for every week of liver-shrinking diet your liver diminishes 2.4%. so for,my nearly 5 weeks my NASH liver will shrink 12% And FYI everybody , these doctors recommend 4 or more weeks so I'm not off target after all.😛👍😛

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
