2018 Study: Difference in weight loss between laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy vs laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

Question: Is there a difference in weight loss between laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in patients with morbid obesity?

Conclusion: This study did not find a significant difference in weight loss between sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass at 5 years of follow-up after surgery.

And M-L.S. I'm going to hang around 5 more years with you so we'll find out for certain, won't we? My surgery will give me a renewed lease on life and I may live a long long time!😝👍😝

@Frustr8 I'm going to hold you to that promise.:)

This study knocks the wind out of the widely-held claim that gastric bypass is superior to the sleeve in terms of greater weight loss.

Darn! And here I was feeling all "abdominally" superior and crap...:(

Interesting article

I think people forget that the sleeve is part 1 of 2 (DS - the most malabsorptive surgery possible) and the efficacy was so widespread in superobese patients part 2 was never needed.
I decided to go with the sleeve because I could just convert to DS later (but I believed it should not be necessary unless GERD - but I have no history, we'll see in 5 yrs))

Findings In this randomized clinical trial that included 217 adults with morbid obesity, percentage excess body mass index loss in patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy compared with gastric bypass was 61.1% vs 68.3% after 5 years, a difference that was not statistically significant after adjustment for multiple comparisons.

We've been saying for years...

With bypass you'll lose about 70% of your excess weight....with Sleeve, you'll lose about 60% of your excess weight.

If anything, the findings of this very small study...confirm this.

@Creekimp13 Thank you for breaking it down. I pretty much just hit the highlights of the study, so it's great that you're able to pull out the numbers and get to the core of the study. This is definitely good news for those who've opted for the sleeve.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
