Hi everyone!

New here! I have been thinking about getting surgery for almost 6 months now and have gone through the whole process with the hospital. Now, I am scheduled for VSG in 3 weeks and I am feeling super nervous and second guessing myself. I am worried about the emotional toll this will take on me, but I don't want to stop myself from surgery just because I am scared. I would love to hear your advice on this topic.

Thanks in advance!

Congrats! You are human. Nerves and second guessing are 100% normal. Just ride it out. You clearly understand that you want the surgery. Is it going to be tough? Yup. Is there going to be some emotional impact? Yup. Is it worth it... Hell yeah it is.

In order to take your mind off your upcoming surgery, I would recommend three things:

1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.

2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery.

3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.

I am in the same boat, just finished everything and met with the dr yesterday. Set everything up for next Wednesday July 25. Now this morning I am scared and thinking if I should do the surgery. But we have to look what got us to look in to this surgery. For me weight, High BP and high cholesterol and of course to be here for my little one. This forum is amazing and they all have gone thru and had amazing result. We can do this.

This is normal pre-surgery jitters, everyone gets it.

Get a good massage, pamper yourself, take a long walk and a good soak. Get a new book to read.

I second that taking a photograh idea, take your measurements too. Start a journal for your emotions. Also load an app on your phone for tracking food and exercise and learn how to use it now. Baritastic or myfitnesspal are free.

Good luck. You got this.

I agree with Sosewsue61, keep on with your prediet trek but be extra special kind to yourself. I always feel better when I am helping others, help mentor someone who is having her own struggle, help an elderly neighbor, read to kids at story hour at the library, help with vacation bible school you find something that makes you feel good, go fishing, boating or bicycling. But down deep, take a minute and praise yourself for this big healthy step you are taking and know it is the very right thing for YOU! I'll be watching for more on your journey my friend.🌸👍❤😝

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
