Low blood pressure 1 week post op

Recommended Posts

I’m one week out from surgery and my bp dropped from 130/90 (controlled with medicine) to 105/60 (without meds) just in the last week, and resting pulse has gone down from 65 and 55. I’ve only lost 8 lbs. My doctor says everything is ok and was the one who told me to stop taking my meds. My question is whether anyone knows what could have caused this to happen so fast? The only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with sodium intake, maybe??

I am taking Vitamins and on Protein based liquid diet. I was a low BMI sleever and was 30.5 on the day of surgery. I struggled with high blood pressure since I was 20, so this is amazing, but also very confusing.

Well I don’t know the why of it. But I can tell you that I had high blood pressure before surgery somewhat controlled with meds.

The same day of surgery post my blood pressure tanked. I was doing good to keep at 80/60 or something to that effect. That kept me in the hospital a couple extra days. In fact my dr had to have iv nutrition hooked up after it kept so low near the 36 hr post mark to try to boost it. It worked it brought it up to at least 100/70.

We had a couple other issues pop up like my breathing would drop way down if they gave me iv pain medication. And my kidneys decided to act up.

Thankfully my dr took good care of me kept me on the hospital till everything was for sure stable and thank goodness my insurance was one of the good ones and approved 3-4 full days in hospital if needed.

And I did need all 4.

At four weeks post surgery my blood pressure is still on the low side of things but it’s healthy compared to before. I’m off all meds. My dr thinks it will normalize as time passes.

Update:

Went to get labs done after no improvement after increasing Water intake. Turns out my Vitamin D levels were low! Not sure why bc I was taking calcium citrate with Vitamin d, but I changed brands to the Bariatric Advantage chewable and my energy levels improved, bp and hr went up, too! Lesson learned: when in doubt, consult a medical professional.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
