Has anyone had their doctor address lifting weight after surgery? How much and when can you go about lifting as you previously did. Thanks.....Bob

You'll be cleared at some point down the road, typically at the 6 week to 2 months. Once fully cleared, take your time and be sure to pay attention to your incisions. But otherwise once cleared and you are feeling well enough, it's game on.

My doctor said I couldn’t lift anything more than 10lbs for the first few weeks and to only hold things close to my chest. I had help with groceries and the like my first few weeks. I was cleared to go back to full on weight lifting (I’m a crossfitter) after 4 weeks. I hit a PR of a 280lb deadlift shortly after 4 weeks.

My doctor said 10 lbs after surgery. Then, at my 2 week follow up they said I could increase to 25 lbs. and just continue to add more as I feel better. I'm 3 1/2 weeks post-op and don't feel ready for any weight lifting due to my left side incision pains and a pulled lower left back muscle. I think taking it easy for some time after surgery is best for healing. I'm hoping by 6 weeks I'll be back to all normal activities but I agree with @Matt Z and think it could be closer to 2 months. Our bodies just went through major surgery.

I was restricted to no more than 10 lbs as well as no overhead lifting for a month

That is incredible! Major kudos to you! Was that a 1 rep max or a 5 rep work set? You beat my PR 5 rep set by 20 lbs!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
