Giving up protein shakes

Recommended Posts

I have finally come to the realization that I may be relying on Protein Shakes out of pure laziness.

I can clearly get all of my Protein from food at this point and I can use then as Creamer in coffee but I end up tossing a lot of it out. I may give them up fairly soon or use very rarely.

At what point were you able to give them up and rely solely on food sources for protein ?

I like using the shakes as an alternative to the half and half and DaVinci sugar free Syrup I was using for my coffee before surgery. . I put about 3 ounces of shake to 16 ounces of coffee in my 20 oz. Yeti. I just keep the opened shake container in the fridge until I use it all so no tossing out. It adds about 15G Protein to my macros which is fine since my protein portions are still fairly small. I am usually about 70-80G protein per day total.

Only about 2 1/2 months but I do not plan to stop using them for that. I have not drank one in at least 6 weeks.

Got it, my inflammation from surgery has subsided I am able to consume more solids, the NUT warned me that they would want me to get all of my Protein from food and I didn't think it possible until I looked at my macros for yesterday and I was at 160!
I had 2 Protein Shakes, totally unnecessary.

I have been too hungry to have Protein Shakes. I mean real hunger, not head hunger. I eat all of my Protein and the shakes are just added calories at this point.

I have one once in a while if I eat a lower protein meal (certain salads).

Sleeved may 9, down 33 lbs or so, not weighing in daily - too stressful 😬

Yes, at the last time I saw the NUT (6 weeks post op) she said that the Protein Shakes are no longer recommended because they slide right through the pouch and don't keep you feeling satisfied for very long. I asked her about using them in coffee and she said that was fine. I just hate those powdered creamer things and this makes my coffee feel so decadent...

160 Grams of Protein? ? That is a lot of chicken;)

Looking back at my records, it looks like I was off of them as a regular thing at a little over a month or so out. The shakes were there only occasionally after that (and still are for special use, mostly for exercise recovery after some workouts, but those are a different composition now, for a different purpose.)

I am a bit of a creature of habit and routine. I LOVE my Breakfast shake (vanilla whey powder, shot of coffee, ice - 25g protein) and intend it to be my daily breakfast forever!!

I am 7 months out, below goal, and trying to stop the weight loss now. This breakfast makes me not want food until lunchtime, no cravings so no dumb choices, and has the added bonus that I like the taste - so no need to give it up, for me.

RNY for me. Revision from a gastric band that had turned rogue! So at surgery was at 230lbs - down from my 260 at band surgery 9 years ago, but up from my 180ish post-band weight.

i took three months to find a Protein Shake recipe I can stomach. Hate the Protein taste in whey, and pea is even worse. My ‘forever breakfast’ shake has a shot of coffee, 50/50 vanilla and plain unsweetened whey protein, a dash of milk and 7 ice cubes blended into a slushy. In the weekend, I leave out the coffee and add a few berries for variety....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
