rebchief 52 Posted July 18, 2018 Good evening all. I have noticed several on here that I have various pre-op diet regimens. My doctor has me on a sugar Buster diet up until two days before and then it’s all liquids. Is this normal? Has anyone else done this? 1 GreenTealael reacted to this
Creekimp13 5,840 Posted July 18, 2018 Many (but not all) doctors use a VERY low carb diet just before surgery to shrink the liver and make surgery safer.
rebchief 52 Posted July 18, 2018 I understand. Was just curious why some are shakes and liquids two weeks before while others like me are not. I don’t want to be behind the 8 ball so to say.....
AggiG 176 Posted July 18, 2018 I was told that the liquid diet was to shrink the stomach not the liver. This is from one of my nurses.
GreenTealael 25,436 Posted July 18, 2018 It varies by surgeon and patient, if you have fatty liver and a cautious surgeon, you may have a strict preop diet, if you have vet surgeon and skinny liver no preop diet and every variation in between.VSG2017 HW 249 SW 238 CW
Creekimp13 5,840 Posted July 18, 2018 (edited) I have a vet surgeon...who is actually a member of the board that certifies bariatric surgeons here. My liver was pretty good before surgery because I'd lost 35 pounds. I still had to do a two week ketogenic diet "for extra safety." My surgeon is a very type A perfectionist. (great trait for a surgeon...wouldn't want to marry him...lol) Edited July 18, 2018 by Creekimp13 1 Frustr8 reacted to this
