How long was you in the hospital after gastric bypass?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery at 5 pm (yes pm, not am!) on Wednesday and I was discharged the next day, Thursday, at around 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

I'm in Georgia and they say more than likely I will have mine between 6 and 11am and will be discharged the next day or the day after and I'm a little nervous I've never ever spent one night away from my babies. I have a wonderful mom and dad who I know will take wonderful care of them while I'm in the hospital but I'm so nervous with leaving them. The thought of not waking up from surgery terrifies me. Is this anxiety normal also lol?

My surgery was late in the day before I was #3 in line. The two cases ahead of me were, apparently, a lot more complicated than mine. Originally, I was scheduled for about 12:30-1:00pm, but the cases took far more time than anticipated. Yes, it seemed like forever waiting for my turn, but if I were on my surgeon's operating table, I wouldn't want him to rush my bypass because someone is WAITING.

Yes, it is completely normal to be nervous, especially if this is your first surgery or if you've never had experience with anesthesia.

Anesthesia nowadays is a piece of cake. You will be under so fast that you won't have time to be nervous. Believe me, there are highly-trained professionals taking care of you and you'll be extremely well cared for. I was under before I could count to five. It's that fast. Don't make yourself crazy reading isolated bad-experience stories. Those don't apply to you. Either the stories are updated or they're about people who had complications from the get-go.

Please don't worry yourself unnecessarily. It's important to separate your rational fears from irrational ones.

And, sweetie, you will wake up. :) In fact, before you know it, you'll be in the recovery room where more people will be buzzing around you, all taking wonderful care of you.

Be positive. This is a day for you to Celebrate. You packed your bags. You've worked hard to get to this point, so enjoy your surgery date. Take photos. You'll regret it if you don't. This is the beginning of your journey. Your life will change for the better.

Be happy. Everyone here is rooting for you. If you need to talk, come back here and someone will talk to you. Feel free to send me a private message if you'd prefer that. I have a medical background so I can help you understand some of the medical stuff, too.

I know how it feels to be away from your babies. I am the mother of four children, all now grown... but they will always be my babies.

You said your parents will be watching your little ones. They'll be in good hands. I know you're not used to thinking about yourself, but you need to think about yourself on your surgery day. This is your special day. A day for you and about you.

I suspect,i will be there for no,less than 2 days, maybe 3 as a token tribute to the fact I am above an average age for a surgical subject. On the other hand , I was only,in 2 days for a knee replacement and I will be able to walk better with this one. Stay tuned my bari-friends- for that answer will be given soon!😷🏣& 😛

I was there for two nights. I was discharged a bit late in the day because they gave me an extra liter of fluids before I left as I was a bit dehydrated.

My surgery was on a Saturday and I left Monday around 5 pm.

I think it depends on the doctor and the hospital. I am scheduled for Sept 10 and they said 2 nights, released on the 3 day.

It’s was the same as when I had my sleeve 6 years ago.

I had my RNY surgery on May 15th at 9:30 am .on Tuesday and went home on Wednesday the next day at 11:30am.

I was up walking after surgery at 2pm on tuesday.just kept walking all around the hospital wing.

Yes it's true it all depends on your Doctor .

Good luck .

I was in the hospital two nights but I needed a second surgery because I started hemmoraging and needed a blood transfusion. I may have gotten to leave in one night if it wasn't for the second surgery.

I was in for 3 days, that was the minimum the hospital I went would allow, but they used my surgery as a study to show there is no need to go 3 days, I haven’t heard if the study has made any changes on the length or f stay yet or not.

I was at the hospital for about 24 hours. My case started around 11:00 AM and I was out the next day before 12:00 Noon. They kept me in there until they saw I was able to hydrate myself.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
