4 weeks post op no appetite

Recommended Posts

Most days I have to force myself to eat. The biggest problem I have is drinking Water. Before surgery I would drink about a gallon per day easy, now I have to force water. I take my Vitamins and Calcium and I can stomach Jello. Is anyone else experiencing this? Help. I suck on ice too hydrate myself.

I've posted about my struggles getting enough Protein and fluids several times lately. Here's a comment I posted less than an hour ago. By the way, I've noticed other people concerned about the exact same problem, so we are not alone!

I had a bypass. I see that you had a sleeve. Our post-surgical recovery experiences are probably similar, aren't they? I wonder what physiological differences exist, if any.

After one month I finally discovered the obvious. I had everything on hand but I wasn't able to get my act together. Fatigue and anemia, what an amazing combo!

I mixed two scoops of unflavored whey Protein Powder and added it to a cup of plain Greek yogurt. It tasted fine completely plain since I like plain yogurt, but I decided to sprinkle in some sugar-free peach Jell-O powder as an experiment. I had second thoughts afterward, though, since artificial sweeteners taste horrible post-surgery. It ended up being okay. No grit. No aftertaste.

Anyway, that's 22g of Protein that I managed to get down without a problem. I thought I'd notice a mealy texture from the Protein Powder but it blended in smoothly and perfectly.

I also have some Matcha-flavored whey protein powder that might be worth trying in yogurt, too. I haven't opened the container yet so I don't know how it'll work with yogurt.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein Shakes.

A few weeks after surgery, I completely lost my appetite. It was not difficult to drop the weight because hunger disappeared. This loss of appetite does not last forever. In about a year it came back but it has never been as strong as before surgery.

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. Be willing to experiment. After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Even Water changed. In the hospital it tasted excessively chlorinated and I could not drink it. So I experimented. sugar free popsicles became my best friend. Some individuals find hot or cold can help with fluids. For me, I found that I could tolerate flavored water. So I began using Crystal Light. I also found a new drink Bai which I liked cold. In the winter, I found that I tolerate Hot Drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good.

The fluid requirement is met by a combination. It is not only the water that you drink each day. But also the water you drink when you take your Vitamins and medicine. It is the milk you drink. It is the fluids content of the protein shakes. It is the water component of the Soups you take. It is met by flavored water such as Crystal Light. It is met by sugar free popsicles. It is met by tea and Decaf coffee. It is a combination of all the fluids that you consume during the day.

I had no appetite for several months. Didn’t meet my requirements- but taken plenty of Vitamins. Now I’m often hungry 10 months out. Taste buds completely changed. I get full very easily though- can eat 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup at a time. Do the best you can. That’s all you can do. Over stressing won’t help.

I am almost 7 weeks out, and still no appetite, i have to remind myself to take a couple bites or sips of something every couple hours just to make sure. So i keep yogurt, tuna, Premier Protein shakes, muscle milk, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes on hand at all times. Even surgar free popsicles. I add a scoop of whey Protein powder also. Im getting between 400 to 500 calories a day. Your not alone.

When I first got sleeved, I could not eat anything. I only sipped Water and sucked on ice for about 2/3 months before my stomach tolerated Jello or a broth. Pretty much before I could eat soft or any Foods. This will pass you by just stay strong, keep hydrated and try to get Protein in if you can but stay hydrated!

I’m almost 2 years post op now and lost my weight. You will be fine and will get past this!

I am 5 1/2 weeks out RNY still on a liquid diet/ some mushy foods.... pretty much everything makes me nauseous 😕 I can’t move phases until I reach the 60 g of Protein goal but that seems impossible most days I may get 5g. I have tried shakes, flavored Protein Drinks, protein powder it all makes me miserable 😢 I force down as much Water as I can a day but that’s hard also.

@Frustr8 I am 4 months out and a little over a month ago I found out the biggest part of my problem was I had a stricture. Once I got that fixed I am feeling much better. I am able to eat little bits at a time and I am drinking 4 Premier Protein shakes a day. I still have rough days but doing much better!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
