Bowel Movements - TMI !

Recommended Posts

Apologies in advance for this topic. I am 2.5 months post-op. For the past month I have been having irregular bowel movements. And recently the last three bowel movements were very painful, a little bloody and large (ugh sorry!). I have called the doc’s office, but would like to hear from those of you who have dealt with this.

I have Colace and powder Miralax at home. Which would you take? Which is safer?

Thank you! I am dreading the next bm. This morning’s felt like giving birth to a porcupine ! Lol

Try the Miralax morning and night. If that's too much, cut the dose half but still take it morning and night. See if that helps.

Agree with this!

Long term, add more Fiber to your diet. Either through food, or with something like Benefiber.

And @AngelaZ, you are nowhere near the edge of TMI-land around here!

They are both safe and safe to use together.
As stated, up your fiber. And most def make sure you are drinking lots and lots of Water.

I don't know about the commercial laxatives but I often use a sugar substitute ( sugar alcohols, stevia etc) which consumed in higher amount act as a laxative. This gives the stool a looser texture and no pain as it is excreted. Please anyone chime in if the other stuff does the same.

Thank you everybody for your help! The Colace helped a little while I was waiting for my doc office to get back to me. The bm’s were still gigantic (ugh sorry lol) but they were softer, so less painful.

I was eventually advised by my doc’s office to try dieter’s tea and Benefiber. I had already added more fiber with food but that did not seem to help. I started benefiber yesterday in my Protein Shake. My subsequent bm was a bunch of marble shapes. Not ideal, but better than the porcupines I was passing before.

I have also decided to change my Multivitamin to one without Calcium since I already take calcium chews for that . Doc’s office said that might help as well.

Thanks!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
