Vacation 8 weeks post op

Recommended Posts

Hola peeps! I have a Mexico vacation planned for a friends 40th birthday in December and I will be about 8 weeks post-op by then. I'm debating on whether I should reschedulee and wait until after the trip and the holidays or not? I know that there will always be something that I have planned; it's not that I would delay for that reason. I just want to be able to kayak, jet ski and snorkel and be active for the week and also not have to pack baby food or have issues finding what I can eat. It is all inclusive, so I'd miss out on the drinking I guessing 8 weeks out but that's ok :)

Trip has been planned since last winter - there are over 40 people going and several celebrations throughout the week, so it won't be a relaxing week by all means. Lots of activity and lots of celebrating...

Just looking for some advice on how people felt 8 weeks out; am I worrying about something that isn't a big deal, assuming surgery and healing goes as planned? What would you do if you were in this situation?

Sounds like an amazing trip!

I wasn't allowed to swim/bathe for 6 weeks while until my incisions were fully healed. I recommend asking your surgeon. The Water activities may be too much for your stomach as it requires a lot of core. Definitely a surgeon question.

I had an easy recovery, so I would have had no issue on this kind of trip at 8 weeks post op. I started back to work travel at 3 weeks post op.

On most programs, at 8 weeks you should be on regular food. I have an Iron tummy, so I was and am able to eat just about everything. For activity, at 8 weeks your incisions should be well healed. I'd just play all the activities by ear though, as you might have low energy or be more easily exhausted because of your low calorie intake. I'd suggest taking a B12 sublingual, as it can help with energy levels.

Unless you have serious complications, there is no way I would cancel this trip. Even if you're not able to do all the activities, being in MX with your friends sounds better than being at home!

I had bypass 9 days ago and went for my follow up today. The doctor told me I could use tub and pool this weekend. I’m flying out of town at end of the month which his office okayed before my surgery. I would play the jet skiing and such by ear but otherwise I think you’ll be great. I’ll be on all solids at 5 weeks. Maybe check with your doc about their stages for food and make sure you’ll be released by then.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
