Hello everyone !!🌸

Sooooo, in my last post I stated I had chosen the bypass surgery , well after speaking to my psychiatrist I decided it would be in my best interest to go with the sleeve. And this is why , I have the diagnosis of major depressive disorder and I am currently on a very good med regimen, my mental health is very important to me , I’ve had a lot of ups and downs , and now that my mood is stable and I’m enjoying life , if possible I don’t want to risk it. My Psychiatrist was concerned that with the bypass malabsorption is a high possibility , and although the sleeve has that risk as well , the risk are greater with the bypass . So with that being said having the bypass would possibly put my at risk of not absorbing the antidepressant meds that I need to have quality of life . So the sleeve it is , anyone had this same or similar issue? And also any San Diego July sleevers in the house. Let me know whatcha think

How confident are you that your psychiatrist has a good understanding of pharmacology as it relates specifically to bariatric surgery? Sleeve vs gastric bypass?

Which meds are you taking?

Dose? How often do you take each med?

Dosage form (immediate release or extended release)?

The sleeve is working for me with the medication I take - Wellbutrin SR, I initially took IR right after surgery. I have trouble w IR - as it dumps too quickly and then I am in a crying puddle on the floor, and in an altered surgical besides, hmm - it wasn't pretty.

It would be a logical conclusion that in the bypass because the small intestine is bypassed that medications/nutrients have less chance to absorb or breakdown, as that is exactly how that surgery is designed to work. Dosage and finding the 'right' psychiatric drugs are difficult in the first place, let alone considering malabsorption along with it.

Good luck on your journey.

I have exactly the same issue. I'm pre-op, and my surgeon at first recommended the sleeve because of the absorption issue with my psych meds and bypass. Then we discussed my severe reflux and decided to do the bypass because of that. Just going to work closely with psychiatrist and test my levels of meds. I think if you don't have reflux then the sleeve is the way to go. Good luck!

I am currently taking Wellbutrin er 300 mg per day . I am confident that my Psychiatrist has strong knowledge how my particular med is broke down into the system , also she has experience with Bariatric patients . She has been my psychiatrist for quite sometime and has seen me through some really dark times and I fully trust her, because of our history I’m not going to stop trusting in her now . Btw when I spoke to my surgeon regarding the antidepressant he did not disagree that the absorption of the Wellbutrin could possibly be an issue , he agreed that the sleeve would perhaps be the better choice , so here we are🌸

I also take Wellbutrin and went with the sleeve for the same reasons.

I think the logic make sense. There are a lot of great success stories with sleeve, just as many as bypass. Just make sure everything else fits well for the sleeve. Do you have bad GERD? Because it can get worse with sleeve? Are you a diabetic? There is a lot of considerations when picking the right surgery. Medication can always be finagled.

I also am on Wellbutrin ER that may have to be altered but bypass for all the other reasons. And in my case it is more for the depression that set in when I got my refusal and February, had to switch programs and all the uncertainty that was in my life. So I will go to another form, they may taper me down but bit should help me not go n into a post-surgical depression as well. I, like many on here, am a work in progress, still writing my life story, whether it is readable or not, it,is mine!😛👍😷

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
