Why is alcohol that bad for you after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I only drink vodka martinis, straight tequila or Crown Royal and Water in a 16 oz. glass a few times a week. Started at about 6 weeks out. Drink very slowly over at least an hour. Limit to 1-2 drinks per day. Do not feel any different than I did before surgery.

My program was pretty vague and it was discussed a little at the 6 week "now you can eat real food" appointment. They mostly said proceed with caution which I did. I count the calories in my daily totals.

Everyone is different and it might be "best" not to drink at all but I really don't see any negative effects and I enjoy it.

Only an observation...but I think gastric sleeve vs gastric bypass is the answer to why some people seem to tolerate / handle alcohol and others get hit like a brick in the head. I have a friend who had a sleeve and he can sit and drink 5 vodka cranberry drinks and it seems to not phase him. (BTW, he is 2 years in and has not had any weight regain.) I on the other hand with a gastric bypass cannot finish 2 vodka drinks without passing out before finishing my 2nd drink. Go figure, I tell my wife I am a cheap date, but seriously I will never drink and drive (not that anyone should) not even after 1 drink. My experience at home has taught me that I cannot handle even a fraction of my pre OP alcohol consumption.

My surgery was May 9, 2018 and I have lost 25 pounds. You have lost 80 pounds. Wonder why there is a such a difference in loss figures when our surgeries are so close to each other. Any thoughts?

The "starting weight" figure includes losses pre-surgery. ScoutCR may have had a longer pre-op weight loss period. ScoutCR also had bypass surgery, which tends to have a more dramatic early weight loss (and faster overall loss) versus sleeve surgery.

I was an alcoholic already pre op. Does that mean I'm good to go?

BTW havn't had a drink post op and I plan on trying my hardest to keep it that way. I was drinking 1400 calories of Vodka ( yes vodka, the one everyone thinks has the least calories) in two to three days. Granted it would be a portion of that if I did drink again, ya know with the small belly and all, but I am not willing to take in those unneeded calories.

Good point J San!

Sometimes it is all about the extra calories!

I enjoy a drink here and there, but I cut myself off for a little bit. I am so close to another milestone/goal that it isn't worth it.

In 2 pounds I am severely obese and no longer morbidly obese!

Exactly correct! I lost 32 lbs in my 6 month pre OP and 52 since surgery! Bypass is a different procedure than the sleeve as we all know. I started out to have the sleeve procedure, but my insurance nixed that once my pre OP tests showed I have barrett's esophagus. My pre OP weight loss was a problem as my insurance questioned how much I lost on my own so my kidney Dr and family Dr wrote letters saying that the surgery was medically necessary. That cinched it and as they say all went well so far.

No judgements on anybody here, OK?

I can think of two reasons.

First, they are empty calories that slide through effortlessly.

Second, if you're under the influence, you're more likely to make poor choices.

Combine #1 & #2 and there's a non-trivial chance for a slippery slope.

My doctor said no alcohol for 18 MONTHS! I never planned on following this bc I’ve researched and he’s the only one who has that long of a wait time. I do plan on waiting a few months tho. Since the sugar is part of the problem, I plan on drinking vodka and Water and bring a sugar-free koolaid squeeze thing with me. It’s the lowest sugar drink you could have. Someone said vodka and soda but I thought carbonation was super bad for us...isn’t it?

My Dr said 12 - 18 months too! But being 25 and getting back into the dating world im planning a few months sober time as well. And hell I like having a cocktail in the evening

It's irritating to your remodled gastric system and does your liver no favors. And I can state is painful l8ver is no fun b and neither is jaundice. But your money, your life, we are adults here. Just because you know better doesn't mean you're going to do better!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
