New here/had consult last week

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am new here and I had my bariatric surgery consult last week and the surgeon I met with said I would be a good candidate for the gastric sleeve. I am 47 and have always struggled with my weight. I have been heavy then (thanks to Prozac) I lost a bunch of weight and kept it off for a while then I gained it all back and then some and have been heavy for the last 10 years. I also suffer from depression and anxiety which leads to the binge eating. I know this is going to be a lot of work and lifechanging for me. I am ready to feel better and be healthy for once in my life. I never knew how hard it is to start this process. Any advice would be great. If anyone is in Massachusetts and going to Leonard Morse Hospital for their surgery, let me know. Thank you, Beth

Hello! I'll also be getting the sleeve. Like you (and many others who have chosen to have WLS) I've lost a significant amount of weight, only to have gained all of it (plus more!) back. Welcome!

Hi Beth! I am new here too; I joined a few weeks back. Last week was my first consult with my surgeon as well however I have been thinking about doing this surgery for quite some time now so I am a bit ahead of schedule in regards to insurance requirements. I had my psych evaluation on 6/18 and have met 4/6 non-surgical weight-loss regimen apts; the fifth one is next Thursday and my endoscopy is next Friday. My anticipated surgery date is late August (preferred) or sometime in September.

I too have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I suffer from anxiety and find it hard to comprehend this decision to have surgery, but nonetheless I am SUPER glad that I have finally committed to it.

Thank you Bryn910!

Welcome Anonbaribabe and I hope you succeed in your next chapter of your life!

Hi KatallacStrong, I wish you the best of luck with your surgery!

Thank you everyone for your responses. I have been struggling with the food and eating very unhealthy things. I feel like I have a "free pass" to indulge on crap until I have to start my diet. It also has been affecting me emotionally. I get these thoughts, "you're not good enough", "you are to old", "you wont stick with it", and it feels like I am sinking in quicksand! I am glad that I am in therapy and I do see a phsychartrist but I am going to be transitioning to a new one since I have had no luck with this one. I started to journal write and share some of my thoughts on here, maybe someone out there can relate. I am going to my first Bariatric support group at Metrowest Medical Center in Natick.

My insurance requires that I lose 5% of my weight in the 3 months before surgery and for the first couple of weeks I was eating pretty poorly. I've finally buckled down though! I'm sure that going to a support group will better help you stick to your goals. My dietician and exercise physiologist meetings are in a group setting and it's definitely helping me with accountability.

Hey Bryn, trust me you are NOT alone. I often find myself slipping with my diet as well feeling like I have a "free pass" as you put it. I typically recognize it and try to find a healthy alternative. Last night I really wanted some ice cream; where I live there is place called Ted Drewes that is famous for their frozen custard; yes CUSTARD! Lol it is SO good but being custard you can imagine how many calories are in it. So instead of getting Ted Drewes I went to the store ad got a box of Yasso Greek Yogurt ice cream bars; it was only 100 calories and it totally satiated my craving.

I have similar thought about myself as well, but I have yet to see a psychiatrist yet; I need to badly though. I never thought about journaling but that's a really good idea.

Thanks for the well wishes <3

For anyone anyone out there who thinks they are too old we just had a 77 year old woman reach her goal weight and it was 3 years after surgery so no age isn’t a factor ok

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
